I expect Coventry to finish mid- to lower reaches of the Championship. Many tipped us for relegation, a good few of our own fans included. Many from other clubs and some from ours still do. Off the field shenanigans and a lack of investment means pessimism > optimism, but we still have decent enough players to secure our league status. A few injuries (and the obvious lack of investment which has characterised us in the last year... we have re-invested less than anyone else in the League) will see us finishing nearer the bottom, but we will stay up.
The nerves are less likely to be setting in now, having won our first game of the season in our most recent fixture. We had not been losing by a lot, we had played some of the tougher teams and we got a much needed striker in the transfer window, making our first real monetary signing in a year. We are more positive now than we were previously, although Andy Thorn was always trying to get us to play the right way.
Andy Thorn was a breath of fresh air having watched the football under Aidy Boothroyd. The formation we play suits the style of keeping it down on the floor and stringing together some passes. In recent seasons, this has been a real rarity and was hugely appreciated for the final ten games of last season when he took over. There has been some frustration at results and a lot of frustration towards the Board, but Andy is relatively flak-free.
Our strengths are...
Youth (Bigirimana and Christie will start and impress, as they have done every game this season, and are both still 17)
Style of play (we are still looking to pass the ball a lot more than in recent years)
Defence (full backs pushing on and centre back pairing looking generally comfortable)
Clingan (quarterback style playing deep in the midfield quartet... generally uses the ball well)
Jutkiewicz (not the finished article up front, but difficult to play against and now, hopefully, has a strike partner)
Weaknesses are...
Strength in depth (we have tried to reduce our total wage bill by half, we are firmly a selling club, administration is still very possible, we were in a transfer embargo last season and it is difficult to accept there is no chance of that status coming back - injuries or further sales could ruin us)
Attacking midfield (we have played a midfield diamond and the more attacking midfielders have not done it with any regularity this season - Baker, Bell and McSheffrey frustrate but are each capable of much more than we have seen this term)
One to watch...
On this season's form, I would probably go for Gael Bigirimana (17 years old, plays in the middle of the park, always showing for the ball, rarely misuses passes, destined for bigger things but 'God sent me to play for Coventry')
Opinion of Ipswich...
Er...
I don't really have one. Let me make one up. Felt sorry for you last season, getting spanked by Norwich. You seem to have brought a lot of players in, but are not setting the world alight. Whilst I bear you no animosity whatsoever, that is ever so slightly pleasing, given our financial status.
If we were to take one of your players... Difficult. I ruled out Bullard (because he is unlikely to be the player he was) and Chopra (because we have just got a striker in). You've got Keith Andrews on loan and he is your top scorer. We'll take him and have another option in midfield, I suppose.
Second victory of the season? Back to back wins? City, you are really spoiling us! Damn you, optimism...
Ipswich Town 1 (Chopra 21)
Coventry City 2 (Jutkiewicz 51, McDonald 72)
