Iphone v Android advice (1 Viewer)

I need to get a new phone as my current contract is up and my Huawei one has been water damaged.

I've always used Android but now Google is limiting Huawei access to Google services my only option seems to be Samsung which I've had before and just don't rate (using an old Samsung at the minute).

Is the latest Samsung a better bet than the iPhone 11/12 or are there any decent alternative Android phones?

This will inevitably turn into an iPhone v Android debate but here we go....

I actually have both - Android as my personal phone & iPhone for work.
I much prefer Android, the fact that it's completely customisable etc. is a big thing for me.

I changed from Huawei at the end of my contract to the (then) new Sony Xperia 1 ii & I have to say I really like it. I use it for music quite a bit & the sound quality & proper headphone jack(!) were essential. There's a Sony Xperia 1 iii now but think it's crazy money.

Family & friends speak highly of the OnePlus & Google Pixel phones too.

Interestingly, I am the reverse. Samsung through work, iPhone personally. Can’t stand the Samsung, feels clunky as anything to use. I’m guessing the major player is familiarity as I’ve had iPhones for about 10 years now.

I'm an Android person and a cheapskate (hence no Apple).

I've stuck to Motorola handsets for the last 5 years or so.

More or less a vanilla Android install and they have a range of phones depending on your budget.

I've got a Sony Xperia and it is absolutely crap! Can't wait to change phone in December when my contract is up.

Had a work phone that was a Samsung and I thought the keyboard was poor. My current work phone is a Google Pixel and it's brilliant, so that's what I'm going to look at getting for my personal phone

Had an iPhone before but didn't like the limitations and bespoke nature of it

Had iPhones from the 5 now on 11 and renewed my contract to sim only last week as no need to upgrade to the 12 as phone works fine.
I was paying £40 a month for 5GB now got 11GB for £11 a month.
I’ll never use it as struggled to use 5GB was averaging 2/2.5 a month.

Haven't had a contract phone for years. If you can afford the upfront cost of a handset (there's some decent one's around for less than £200), I'd recommend going for a tenner/month deal and buying a sim free phone.

I recently changed from Vodafone to Virgin (more data) and the whole PUK thing was surprisingly easy.

I went from iPhone 5 to an iPhone SE, then got another SE and finally had to cave and get the iPhone 12 mini. I don’t like big phones.

Thanks for the advice. I've just signed up for a Google Pixel 4A, it isn't the latest phone from Google but user and geek reviews are excellent and i can get it for just over £20 a month which is about half the cost of my old contract.

Only ever had android and find them easy to use so don't really want to change, but daughter has iPhone as her friends all have one, so now tempted to get one to keep tabs on her, not for any trust issues with her but the things you read about others that could be contacting her etc and I'm not particularly techie so it's all a bit scary!

Why would you need an iPhone to do that?

I have the Samsung S21 , my daughter has the iPhone 11 .

My phone is miles ahead simple as that .

Just have a look around and work out what suits you best on how the operating system works. The operating dynamics of modern phones means you're not going to see much performance difference. You don't need that extra tiny bit of chip power to load up SBT or that extra megapixel to take a picture of your mate at the football with your hand over the lens.

My mate really rates OnePlus. After taking his advice I'm not as zealous (the phone's good, the charging is quick, but I don't like the way when it sleeps, it seems to *really* sleep!) but... might be worth checking out?

Use Google’s ML software/chips so they’re really good quality pics, especially low light, but the sensors themselves aren’t as expensive as the iPhone ones.

My missus has done some awesome night shots with hers I can’t do on my iPhone 12 Pro

Nice 1, friend has that and does everything he needs for a good price (hope it's a step up from that S7 you're using!)

Wife has an S21, amazing bit of kit, but I'm annoyed at Huawei being blocked from Google as I'd stick with them ... Had a P20 Pro for 3 years now and it's still a decent phone, particularly like being able to control infa-red devices and being able to stop background tasks without having to use an App, really saves the juice and still goes a couple of days between recharging. USB port was losing its grip (a common problem apparently) but paid about £30 to replace it a few months ago, we'll worth it if it keeps it going for another year or so.
