Playing like that would never beat a France or Belgium (add several more to the list)

Busy scraping draws against Scotland and Hungary for the same reasons we will not win tournaments. Not enough conviction in our attacking talent and the lumbering Kane walking around aimlessly sums it up. It needs someone else to take it to the next step

Well it was just sloppy without any real full on desire IMO.
Boys didn't seem particularly focused.

They're offering him a new contract though , only way we get somebody different is if he decides to turn it down

The same France that have drawn twice to Ukraine and once to Bosnia in their qualifying group. The same Belgium that piss their qualifying groups and piss their pants at tournaments.

We need to get over this obsession of minor games. If he gets to the WC then he's done the job.

We are severely lacking upfront Kane aside.

If he was injured going into Qatar you wouldn’t give us a chance with a strike force of Calvert-Lewin, Abraham and Watkins.

Thought Mount did a lot better second half and clearly not afraid of a tackle. Strange decision to take Grealish off and Saka just couldn’t get into the game.

To be fair, every major game he's managed us in he's failed .

Holland (nations league )
Croatia (World cup)
Italy (euros )

France won the nations league this past few days and the world cup in the last 4 years .. they are winners

If Belgium made it to the WC how did they still piss their pants?

No, no he hasn't.

We have a group players that can win but a manager who lacks the balls and tactical ability to do it

I know, but I'm not convinced that it's down to him, as much as having been lucky with the generation of players, Lovely bloke, intelligent, but I'm not sure I'd be excited if you told me he was going to be the next City manager,

It's not as though he got this post on the back of his managerial exploits to date was it. Marks and Spencer man, toes the line, says the right things

Was Germany in the quarters not a major game, was our first semi final win in 50 years not a major game. Nobody gives a shit about the nations league.

It's worth noting that Belgium also have their very own Gareth Southgate in Roberto martinez .. the wrong man to lead that generation .. great win ratio, shit when it meant anything , not a good manager

Jogi Lowe didn't exactly have a brilliant club career and he did alright. A lot of countries actually do well bringing managers through their youth setups as it's different from club football.

Better to beat a shit German side in a major tournament than beat a great German side in qualifying, do fuck all in the tournament but obsess about it for 20 years.

If I was trying to assess Gareth Southgate, he's a top guy who you can imagine gets players to keep a cool head, and is extremely pragmatic, but you could never imagine him giving a Shankly (look him up if you're a youngster) type speech to get the players in a 'let's rip their throats out' style speech. That's why he is so popular with the FA hierarchy, and why a Brian Clough, Neil Warnock type would never get the job.

Not sure , I felt that Italy beneffited massively by playing a style similar to top club sides at the euros .. pressed hard , countered rapidly fast .. looked every bit a top European club side under a very good club manager Roberto mancini

Isn't Sam Allardyce exactly that type though?

I'm not even a huge fan of Southgate's tactics, I just don't get all the shit he gets when he's one of our most succesful managers ever.

On paper maybe , can't brush aside the amount of luck that we got with the draw at both tournaments that gave him that title

I also really liked that Italy team but they could only get a goal against us by it bouncing off a defender's arse at a corner then us having 3 terrible penalty misses. If Mancini was that much better at international management he'd have battered Southgate.

Well he's transformed Italy from the 21st ranked side in the world, lost 3 games in 44 and won the euros .

In 3 years , also came 3rd at the nations league just ... beating Belgium 2-1 in the 3rd /4th playoff

Fabio Capello is our greatest manager on win % ever (that has managed for more than 1 game) when he qualified for the world cup he came 2nd in a group containing USA, Algeria and Slovenia and then got battered in the 16s.

I don't care how we get where we're getting so long as we get there. Feel free to call Southgate a twat if we're eliminated in Qatar group stages but it feels like were in the same position we were pre-euros when friendlies are massively analysed and there is an overreaction.

And if Marcus Rashford could put a pen 2 inches to the right Southgate would have turned around a team that hadn't won anything for 55 years who are notoriously difficult to play for with overhyped fan and media expectations into European champions.

I'd agree with that. Nothing against him per se, but as much as I am currently enjoying watching City, I find I am regularly frustrated watching England, when they are too often less than the sum of their parts,

Because we rolled the dice that letting them have the ball and trying to break us down would win it for us. It obviously didn't but I still stand by if we scored our third pen we're European champions right now. If that paid off he'd have a knighthood and a statue on the way.
