Interested in policies or ideas that might be out there around the hotels situation. Labour said they'd sort it out.

Small boat crossings going up for a decade AFAIK, any examples of similar situations being improved elsewhere?

No need talking about immigration and asylum on here because as soon as you do, you'll be called racist! Just for wanting an immigrant who raped a 5yo gone, just because "he's got a foreign sounding name"! Countries gone to the fucking pits! Absolute bunch of wet cunts! Its time a proper government, not scared of being cancelled, comes in and sorts it out! A LOT of people will be shocked come the next elections when reform win. The same people that thought branding everyone a nazi during the brexit elections would be enough to win that one!

Come on, an election is way off and this is an issue that's causing a lot of noise right now and having an impact on a lot of lives day to day. It's driving a wedge between people.

Is there a chance we can use a thread to talk about ideas for right now and talk about what might work, what people might support irrespective of their general politics?

Posts on other threads tells me there's folk that have done their homework on the subject from different perspectives. It gets drowned out by personal stuff that's chucked about.

The approach I'd like to see is something I've posted about before, relying in the long term on reducing our reliance on foreign labour by putting more into education and better pay and conditions. The rationale being to generate more of our own 'home grown' skilled workers while attracting more 'home grown' workers into the sectors where we're relying too heavily on cheap labour from abroad (social care one notable example).

The issue with this is it will take years to pay off so people would need to be patient. As for asylum claims, I want to see the government working much more closely with the EU and if necessary developing off shore, jointly staffed processing centres in order to avoid anyone chancing more dangerous routes into the country. The practice of using hotels as holding pens must be stopped as soon as possible on top of this.

So, leave school at 16. You then have a choice. 2 years National Service. That could mean anything.... Army, Navy, RAF, Fireservice, Police, Paramedic etc. Alongside this 2 year service, you will also do NVQs to gain what qualifications you didnt get in school. Also some DofEs etc. Helping you grow as a young adult. (The Army already do similar. I did 12 month basic training, which is usually 12 weeks, in Harrogate where I gained NVQ L2 in English and Maths having g left school with 0 GCSEs.)
So people in these "colleges" are training alongside improving themselves. Not in the army or fireservice, but working towards the possibility of it.
Then at 18 you have 2 choices. Leave, hopefully a better, more rounded person, and rejoin civvie street, or go on to do corps specific phase 2 training and join a regiment/core etc and become a full time member of the armed forces/fireservice etc.

The people, and no doubt they'll be on here and along soon enough, that are adamant their kid isnt joining the army blah blah blah, then it is down to your child, and you as a parent, to ensure they have enough grades from school to go on to Uni (properly uni, not this shit you get nowadays. A PHD in Taylor Swift ffs) or, enough grades AND have secured a placement on an apprenticeship.

So, in a nutshell, 2 years on National Service or buckle down at school to get the grades you need for uni or an apprenticeship.

I mean I’m doing a PhD now in developing greenhouse gas mitigation strategies. The money offered for it is pitiful but reflective of what our government is willing to contribute. I’m biased but that number should be higher and if it was, you’d attract high calibre research and development to the UK.

National service in countries who have it tends to be a split between military and civil service, Switzerland has a pretty effective set up for that . I don’t necessarily object to that sort of thing over here.

Same way you enforce kids go to school. A parent knows there kid goes to school from age 4 to age 16. It just happens. It was enforced in the 50s. Its still enforced in a LOT of countries now. You leave school, you do 2 years on national service. Greece, Austria, Sweden, Denmark. All have National service as a mandatory requirement.

I don't disagree but it doesn't help when there's the attitude that the countries where the common entry points are should be responsible for actually housing them, especially when the numbers entering the countries illegally are much higher than the likes of the UK.

What is meant by doing a uni course, is one that actually has job prospects. One about Taylor Swift or ive seen one for Witchcraft and Wizardry before, aren't likely to get you a top job at a solicitors firm.

If, afterwards, you want to go back and learn about Harry Potter at uni, then do so in your own time, with your own money.

It may not lead specifically to a job either, but you're not doing it as a way of dodging national service so crack on
