I'm still not sure what her role is ?

I doubt she's had any role in our change of fortunes at all considering the things that changed are 2 coaches and a head coach

Unless she's got this unbelievable role in the background that's groundbreaking

Meant to say what her role does. Not whether she’s responsible for the change in fortunes.

It’s more the fact she was getting blamed for results when we weren’t doing well, when despite her job title, a very miniscule amount of that responsibility was hers. Now we are doing well, she’s still here, people haven’t yet acknowledged this.

Was a bit like blaming the club kitchen staff for Gus Hamers injury in the playoff final.

Probably get slated for this but think many of us just flat out refused to look at the management of the club and as such went after anyone and everyone else.

I'd say the same about those ranting and raving about everything and anyone earlier in the season. So much unjustified panic and pessimism after every little setback.

No, people were blaming recruitment, what they couldn't agree on was who was responsible for it and as she said in an interview she was heavily involved some flak came her way.

As it turned out, it doesn't look like the recruitment was that bad after all.

Yeah it went on to be that in the end; her help in recruitment re; players personalities etc.

It started off with a lot of questions and little understanding as to what she does and what her responsibilities involved, with some posters vastly overstating / over estimating her say in things (I’m not doubting she has some say in things).

Gus Hamers injury, as we all know had far more to do with Samoan Joes.

I think the whole recruitment thing was far more nuanced than anyone was making out at the time.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't get involved but I did point out that for 3 to 4 months the squad were playing like a team in an autos spot so the ability wS clearly there which we're seeing again now.

I hate saying it because I love the man but our poor form was down to the previous manager and coaching staff that were not up to it. The players shown they were good enough the previous season.

In hindsight Robins made some baffling decisions. He basically froze out Kitching, dropped Dovin for Wilson and didn’t play EMC in his favoured role. He also dropped Simms after he’d scored and played well which proper dented his confidence.

I just think he ran out of ideas, but that does not take away his achievements and for me is still one of, if not the, greatest managers this club ever had

I agree. Though Dovin did play in the majority of the games he managed this season.
But it was definitely the end of his era.

Yeah I think the mentality of the players brought in has actually turned out to be more resilient / professional than was being suggested.

Even when results were bad with Robins, there were a lot of games where you could see the potential. Just the balance of the squad / first 11 seemed to be off. Coaching staff were also part of the issue here.

I don’t think the club helped with that perception when they were releasing City Unseen videos of the players playing head tennis after yet another defeat!

Tbf to these ones, not sure how baffling they were.

Kitching's a strange one, as it clearly wasn't football related, so we don't know the reasons to comment if it was baffling or not. He was not picked for a fair while after Robins left, either.

It *is* baffling to us when we don't have the full info, but that's not the same.

Dovin was dropped after making a compete howler in an international game; he's a very young inexperienced player, and you don't know how that might have affected him. It may have been sensible to take him out of the firing line for a spell.

EMC's favoured role is also Wright's most effective position. Who's first pick there? Still Wright for me.

It had clearly gone wrong, but I don't think it was individual selection decisions that were causing it. The new set-up just wasn't working and the players looked as if they didn't really know what they should be doing.

I think its right to say the EMC situation was baffling.
He was like a fish out of water on the right and everyone could see it.
Lampard will have the same conundrum in a few weeks,be interesting to see what he does.

Yeah the main differences have been the simple ones haven’t they!

Dovin in goal, Kitching back in, EMC in his favoured position, less rotation of the strikers.

I fully understand the reasoning behind why Robins wasn’t doing all of those things initially though, other than Kitching which I guess we’ll never fully know.

I'm sorry, but I have to go OCD about this when it's mentioned!
Dovin played the majority of games that Robins managed this season, think he only dropped him for a couple of league games, people keep talking like he didn't play him.

The Kitching one is baffling, but not just with regard to Robins.
Robins played him last season in a team that was playing well up until April, then dropped him start of the season.
Carr brought him back for 1 game then dropped him and Lampard didn't play him for some time yet he's clearly improved us since he's returned so who knows what the story is.

Maybe there's something in the stories about his attitude and he's started to knuckle down

I know he's mates with Fadz Maybe he's mentored him bit.
People forget, Fadz was far from a model pro early in his career and has admitted as much in interviews so maybe he's used his experiences to guide him onto the straight and narrow but that's just me guessing.

That’s fair about Dovin, I am a forgetful person was it when Dovin first came to us? Did he get “dropped” for mental health / a rest or something?

What kind of naughtiness was Fadz up to in his early career? I can see the devil in him tbf.

If I remember correctly he just said he wasn't been professional and I'm fairly sure he got bombed out of Sheff Utd.
These are young men at the end of the day, and I don't think most of us mature until we're in our 40s if at all!

If anything we have a better sense of what her specific role is than we do of Joe Edwards or Chris Jones.

Which is not to say she that her role is greater than the coaching staff, but she clearly deserves credit for the things we know that she’s been involved with.

Exactly. The narrative around her at the time that Robins was sacked was ‘she’s the Performance Director and performances have got worse since she came in’.

Dr Roberts is obviously not responsible for the performances on the pitch, that’s down to coaching, tactics and in-game decisions of the manager.

Like Austin, King the players and the coaches, many of our fans did not one to believe that the person who was primarily responsible for results was Mark Robins.

My main reason for criticising her, as well as Dean Austin, was that those two, along with Robins, were the people responsible for interviewing and hiring the new coaches Boateng, Carr and the two from the academy. I think it's fair to say those were far from great picks. There were other things, such as how so many of the players seemed to have regressed, especially Simms who is clearly a confidence player and psychology is supposedly her forte.

Clearly she wasn't going to be the sole or even main reason for things going wrong, but she definitely had a role in it. King apparently ignored senior figures at the club telling him not to appoint FL (who those were exactly I don't know - she could well have been one). FL then appointed his own coaches this time.

Hopefully this means she is now focused more on other things that her skill set is suited for and showing her worth in those areas.

All of these things have always been linked back to Robins. That’s the harsh reality of things.

On the topic of Simms, and he was t the only player impacted by this… Robins chopped and changed the team too much and players all over the squad struggled for form. Simms started the first 5 games of the season, the next time he started in consecutive games was in January. The same was true for BTA, who’d mostly played as a winger. It was only Bassette’s run in the team that there was a consistent player upfront barring Haji Wright. The same was true for players like; Dovin, Kitching, EMC. Robins didn’t how didn’t know what players or formation to play and his inexperienced team couldn’t turn the tide, that was his downfall. Something revealing that MR said was that his coaches were ‘growing into the role’.

The issues were of coaching and tactics because the same players got impressive results without our captain and our top 2 goal scorers.

King is on record saying he’s happy with her role and all the improvements made in her area. The off-the-grass things.
