I've found later in life I'm a decent writer and am currently writing for two football magazines. But I wish I'd have had the oomph or confidence to be a writer or journalist years ago. But when I left school it was straight on to building sites like my dad, and if I'd have said I want to be a writer I'd have been laughed at ! Still better later than never I guess. So what profession or career would you choose now if given the chance ?

Sports physio (provided I was involved with a professional club within Cricket, Rugby or Football) or work as a SSN presenter (reason I picked media studies in year 10, didn't realise a lot more to it, thought merely picking it for my GCSE's meant I'd get a seat next to Georgie Thompson).

Nurse or stand up comedian, although I did some radio presenting years ago wouldn't mind getting back involved in that either

Didn't get the chance back then, BRR. Apprenticeship, factory, shop work, college or uni. That was it.

I would give my right arm for the choices they have nowadays.

I wanted to do comedy too, Daz, in a double act.

I would obviously be the straight man. Always also wanted a troupe, you know, like Monty Python or Not the Nine O'clock News, or Who Dares Wins, that kind of thing.

I had great parents but due to their upbringing/generation they had limited ambition especially where work was concerned. You weren't expected to do more than they did,so that meant for me it was labouring, and my sister working in a shop.
If I'd have mentioned being a writer my dad would have thought I was a sissy ! I know Geoff Thompson who wrote Watch My Back, and we had the same upbringing. He too had put downs etc from family and friends. Don't get above yourself !

Ages ago I wrote an act but never had the bottle to preform.

Also I wrote a pilot for a comedy drama based on my experiences working in a care home, this was before gervais did the whole derek series, but I lost it.

Same here. It was a pretty set path depending if you left at 16, 18 or went to uni.

Looking back I wish someone had picked up on my enjoyment of film and behind the scenes work and pushed me towards something like camera work or special effects. It wasn't even something I considered as an option.

Would love to move into a different career now, not entirely sure what to be honest, but how do you make that work financially. One thing to be 18 and take a low paid job to get a foot in the door but does't work so well in your 40s with bills to pay.

Oh bugger. How annoying.

Don't know if mine is worse. Had 3 or 4 years work on a flashdrive. Screenplay, sitcom, short film scripts, play.

Missus threw it in the bin.

This was without her even reading anything. Just assumed it was an old drive (which it was) and because I had a new drive (the old one was full) she thought it a really clever idea to throw it in the bin.

She never reads any of my work.

Was thinking this would be a great thread the other day. Mine would probably be to own mt own reataurant and work as a chef on the western coast of Sicily. Worked in restaurants as a teenager and a bit in my early 20s. I reckon it's probably the thing I'm best at and actually enjoy doing. Oh well..

I've never really wanted to be rich or famous. Just comfortable. I'd love to be able to please myself. Little business ticking over, just not having to answer to some absolute cock that doesn't have a clue what he's doing but got to where he is cuz he knows the gaffer.
That'd make me happy. Just to be my own boss.

I'd love to do something with sport, wanted to be a pe teacher as a kid but smashed my knee up

Glad I didn't go down the teaching route now though.

I did always think I should have learnt a trade like plumber or electrician. Watching forged in fire I'd love to be able to do that sort of thing.

Also wanted to be able to buy struggling businesses and do them up and sell them on. That sort of thing, but never had the money or bottle to do it!

Ha I already am

As a youth I bought a bookshop website off eBay for about £30, made it look pretty and put it back on and got £150. That sort of feeling was good, hardly millions I know!

Looking back if I could choose a path to take, I would have liked to do something in the music business, whether as a producer or an artist or both.

My son used to play the drums in a band years ago,he was really talented but jacked it in. I should have encouraged him but didn't,so I'm just like my dad in a way. I'd tell any youngster now if your good at something just go for it and don't worry what others say.

Yep. Something I keep telling my daughter, but she is always bothered about what other people think, her friends and peers. Really hard to shift her from that position and mindset.

I'd have been a fashion photographer. I've photographed lots of women and couples and many of them told me my photographs were the best they have ever had taken. The problem was I started too late and in the era of film photography. Now everything has switched to digital and it's entirely different. All my photos are on film negatives and they have to be fed through a scanner just to get them online. I used to have a website with them but that shut down years ago.
