I watched highlights of every game we played since the 98/99 season (8 Viewers)

I started supporting Coventry since the 98/99 season and decided to rewatch highlights of every game again (up to the Swansea game just gone). It was like watching a box set of an old tv show. A huge thank you to mrviewsky for making the games available on YouTube. Before any of you ask, yes I have a girlfriend and yes she thinks I’m sad too. It took three years in total to rewatch them all. My three main takeaways are beyond the obvious:

1. 2001-2016 was as grim as I remember. It is normal for a club to have a bad season, but that 15 year period really was horrendous. Terrible football, horrible luck and poor results. We would be lucky to have one game a season which was memorable (usually coming from cup games). Since then I could think of at least ten games a season that stick in my mind. It is a huge testament to our fanbase that we stuck through it. A particular shoutout to the fans who went through that as a teenager (like myself) and never knew of any Coventry joy yet continued to go to games.

2. CBS vs Highfield Road Debate. Admittedly my first visit to Highfield Road was 1998, so maybe some will say I never saw it in its heyday, but I think the brutal truth is that some of the nostalgia is misleading. The stadium tends to be only as good as the state of the club. You could see the ground half full as we fell into the championship and that staleness passed onto the Ricoh (CBS). The CBS now is thriving with the club’s rise and makes a great din. It’s not really about the stadium, but the ownership of the club ultimately that makes the great atmosphere. Sidenote - to state the bleeding obvious, our fans are incredible to stick with the club through those two exiles. I was again reminded of all the pain with the off the field issues.

3. An odd take, but I now feel very lucky to have supported a club that has experienced all leagues in the EFL. It is much rarer than you think and really demonstrates the range of football we have seen. Of course I wouldn’t have wanted to have such a painful fall, but I feel as Cov fans we have a better take of the football pyramid. What a rise it has been which (hopefully) will end in glory this season.

Please forgive my rambling thoughts. PUSB!

Even though I lived and breathed every single one of those games between 00/01 and 16/17 I have no desire whatsoever to relive any of it, and for that I either commend or pity you, probably a bit of both in fairness.

I thought maybe my memory had made it feel worse than it was. It had not.

The only team to have played in every variant of the football leagues. Divisions 1,2,3 & 4; Division 3 North and South; Championship; Leagues 1 & 2; Premiership. Only the Premier League needed to complete the set... we are working on that.

Yeah, pretty confident.

Of course the definition of a "fact" is becoming more fluid these days. I could add that Coventry City is the Biggest, Most Beautiful and EASILY the Most Powerful club that anybody has ever seen.

Yes it's true, the only thing I will add is it's a moot point as to whether the premier league and the premiership are different, as the name changed in 2007 only due to sponsorship change.

And just think...8/9 years ago you would have got far better odds on us leaving the football league completely than returning to the PL!

I often go back to watch 2016/17 highlights, part to reflect on how far the club has come in a decade but also because I really can’t believe we were that bad.

The club just couldn’t get any momentum. Any time things were looking remotely positive we’d be scuppered by bad luck or a poor performance. The 3-0 loss at home to Crewe really sticks out in that regard.

Correct according the Gemini!

If Frank Lampard seals this promotion, Coventry will arguably have the most "complete" CV of any club in the country—having survived, thrived, and played in every possible naming convention the EFL and PL have ever cooked up.

Division Type Status Era/Notes
Division 1 Pre-1992 Top Flight
Division 2 The old Second Tier
Division 3 The old Third Tier
Division 4 Coventry were in the inaugural 1958/59 season
Div 3 (North) 1925/26 Season
Div 3 (South) 1926–1952
The Premiership 1992–2001 (The "Founding Member" years)
Championship Current Second Tier
League 1 Post-2004 Third Tier
League 2 The 2017/18 Promotion Campaign

Premier League Pending 2026/27...

As is often the case LLMs are wrong here. It’s been the Premier League since its founding. The Premiership was the sponsorship name but the organisation has always been the Premier League. Like saying the Sky Bet Championship is different from the EFL Championship.

I agree, but there was an inaugral list of teams which formed the original FA Carling Premiership, of which we were one, so on that basis I guess you could argue either way.

Winning a domestic trophy goes from being impossible to an outside chance. Sunderland had a great draw but blew it.

Sunderland had already got survival in the bag so had a free run at the FA Cup if they wanted to go for it.

If by some miracle we got into a similar position I’d fully support us going for it.

I think we need to see how the leagues going first. Frankly, I'd be happy to solely concentrate all our energy on staying up and playing the reserves in the cup games.

Yeah, tbh I agree. It will be a miracle if we stay up without cup distractions, but I guess I’m saying if the opportunity is there I think we should go at it.

I checked too, it's legit.

In 1924–25, after their sixth successive relegation battle, Coventry finished bottom of the table and dropped into the Third Division North.[27] A year later they were asked by the League to switch to the Third Division South, to keep the sizes of the divisions even.[24]

Honestly surprised some of you lot call yourself City fans!

Some of you not knowing the ‘Playing in all leagues’ one.

It’s the one of the great facts of supporting Coventry City!

Some more-
We were the first team to have a dedicated supporter train to away games.

First to play in an all seater stadium 1981

First team (in England) to play in an all brown kit.
