JSO/XR’s whole thing is that they’re “arrestables” and that they want a custodial sentence and are willing to get one for their cause. It seems a little silly to complain when that happens.

I don’t like how the justice system is getting what politics got and it’s just “everyone’s a corrupt pedo because I don’t fully understand this system”.

Yep I think the worst thing about the system is that for most on here who have good jobs but aren’t rich they have no chance of a fair hearing whether it’s child access or defending oneself you need tens of thousands of pounds

partly why hillsborough and post office and no end of other scandals happen you just can’t afford a hearing

So if a nonce says he won’t nonce again that’s good enough reason not to go to prison?

You don’t need to tell me mate. I’ll be paying for my representation for another couple of years yet. I was very lucky to have access to credit to pay what was needed. And we’re still talking well into five figures.

More if someone says they definitely will commit a crime again they’re less likely to go free.

Unfortunately feel you aren't far wrong

It's the most heinous crime for me, more so than murder.

The people abusing these children are inflicting unimaginable pain and terror on these children who are totally defenceless. They are scarring them for life, they are the lowest scum that the human race has to offer.

Those who commit these crimes I would happily see hanging from a lamppost, beaten within an inch of their lives.

I knew a lad years back who was abused as a child by his uncle. He could never bring himself to have a sexual relationship with anyone, he would occasionally have nightmares where he would be 'back there' and he would drink himself into oblivion to black out and not have them dreams anymore.

He killed himself in his late 20s. Because he still could never come to terms with what happened to him.

My contempt for peadophiles, as I'm sure everyone's is is off the scale

That doesn’t alter someone escaping prison or just even lifetime RSO status for indulging in child porn.

I know mate, I’ve got a couple of good friends who were abused as kids and it’s basically tainted their whole life. All have drug problems. All have mental health problems. Same as the people I know who were raped or had close family murdered. Sentences just seem massively inappropriate for all of them.

Maybe the answer is we double prison capacity and start locking people up more.

It's so sad when you look at how it affects so many people.

I mean my personal view is convicted peados should be given a lethal injection 10 minutes after sentencing but in this day and age people will worry about them being sorry for doing it

I wasn’t the one that made the comparison. It was a point about why you can’t compare different acts in a simple way. There are many factors to sentencing and likelihood to reoffend will be a major one.

The data show locking up first time offenders like Edward’s for a short time increases the chances of them reoffending.

That’s the trade off a judge is making. We might feel better if Edward’s goes to prison for a year, but if that makes it more likely another offence will occur is that OK?

There was the chance to make an example of a high profile case. Not even 10 years registration as a sex offender.

Hardly sends a tough message to those like Edwards-access as much as you want, then say sorry and accept a suspended sentence.

How many more offences are worth it to send a tough message? What’s the evidence a tough message will reduce offending? Are we really claiming pedos are pedos because they’ve got the OK from society?

The fact is everyone should be equal in front of the law, not extra sentences for blokes off the telly.

The issue isn’t Edward’s it’s that there’s so many men committing this crime we can’t lock them all up and we’re only finding a fraction to begin with. I agree you should go to jail for a first offence. I agree sentences should be longer for violent and sexual crimes. We need to build more prisons so we can actually put people away, not just pedos but rapists and murderers and yes even people who have broken non violent laws in some cases.

Noticing you keep dodging the RSO status. It’s just not really a punishment at all, at least not in proportion to the offence.

If you aren’t willing to listen to evidence well I don’t know what to say.
People that get into this stuff don’t wake up one morning and decide they’ll commit criminal shit and if we can learn to recognise the signs we may be able to make society safer rather than pretend it won’t happen to us or our family or friends

Mainly experts like these

Lucy Faithfull Foundation - Preventing child sexual abuse

Lucy Faithfull Foundation works to protect children by working with people who pose a risk and diverting them from causing harm.

But also the magistrate handbook on sentencing

My experience in prison with people like you and me. There are absolute wronguns many are not

Its a funny one isn’t it? Because we’re essentially saying reform of sex offenders isn’t possible. If that’s the case then why let them out at all ever? And if that’s the case why keep them alive? And why only sex offenders, why not a violent offenders or domestic abusers register in the same way so people can be aware.

I don’t know what the evidence is for it TBH but intellectually SRO has always been a bit of an anomaly for me. We recognise sexual offences as unique there and nowhere else seemingly.

He’s not the victim he’s the perpetrator
He’s been arrested charged pleaded guilty and sentenced
Checked my first comment it’s a pretty normal comment

Agreed
Like qualifications too they only serve a useful purpose for a period of time it appears
It’s all management of risk and we are pretty poor at managing it both ways. We are emotive and follow our hearts and intuition rather than facts and evidence.
Very understandable of course especially when you are the injured party or someone close to you is.
There are models where people are thrown off buildings for these crimes but the society that does this has other problems that we may not like

I can't see where they mention him?

I'd happily not be around nonces to be fair, it was bad enough when somebody who was close worked in a prison.

I thought he'd have stayed out of the limelight, but I've just heard that he's heading over to Switzerland tonight to watch the Villa as a personal friend of Unai Emery.

Unai has asked Huw to give the teamtalk and share his experience of Young Boys.

The evidence is that many people are pulled into criminal behaviour on line with porn and other addictive pleasurable activity and there’s a way out of it that doesn’t end up in jail or criminality

No but they would end up with more than the lurgy. That's my point.

My daughter was threatened to be harmed when she was a child by somebody inside for it, I certainly wouldn't be giving them a cuddle or trying to understand them.

It's a good job you can't catch it, it seems like you can certainly sympathise with their offending behaviour which is frankly, disgusting.

My point is how he is completely different to somebody living on one of our streets who will have lost his job and ability to work ever again.

The bloke is a millionaire and will just live in his massive house for his retirement, probably looking at the same sort of stuff online.
