Even when I was at school in the 1960's, only a couple of my closest friends knew that I was in a kids home. I was just too embarrassed to tell anyone. It was a stigma that I carried round with me all my school life. I was also afraid of other lads asking why I was in care, because I simply didn't know and couldn't give an answer. It's an incredible weight to bear when you don't have answers.

crimes like this? so we can’t discuss how wrong that pedos don’t get jail time

fuck me. starmer clearly felt it wasn’t necessary for pedos to be jailed. yet happy to jail someone for a Facebook post

wonder who is more of a threat to society. Nasty person behind a keyboard or a bloke wanting to see sexual images of a child

You are actually talking bollocks. Read about sentencing guidelines and how they are created and the details of various cases. Then read about how the UK justice system and government interact and the separation of powers.

You’re just exposing how little you know about what you’re talking about and making fucking child abuse a party political issue. Get fucked.

Thank you Otis. When I was in my late 30's and early 40's, I did so much voluntary work in Coventry, I reckon I put more hours into volunteering than my normal work. Me and my current missus also fostered for a year or so, taking in a young lad of 12 who had severe behavioural issues. He was extremely demanding. Further to what you said, his mum was in the same kids home as me, but Social Services told me that we mustn't interact with her. They obviously had their reasons. I also took care of another lad who had problems at home. I used to take him to our local youth club each Friday. His mum was so grateful for the short respite. I was also chairman of the Wood End & Henley Green Residents Association. I really enjoyed that work. Oh, and I completed the 3 Peaks Challenge aged 40. We raised £16,000 for Baby Lifeline. So, what I'm saying is, you can make a difference, whatever your family history and upbringing.

Another one here. Why have they waited until he is dead? This looks like a serious rap sheet of allegations.

From the article it says previous attempts were met with lawsuits. Probably couldn’t say anything against a litigious billionaire

I totally understand the law thanks and I totally understand the medium risk with mitigating circumstances means a suspended sentence.

My point is this is not acceptable as it allows people who watch terrified children being raped for their entertainment so on a moral basis this should be condemned as a disgraceful sentence.

I would say I’m surprised given your so called religious standing but then again given your backing of the vile Justin Welby why am I surprised

I’m not sure that’s why he’s had to resign
I think it’s more he shouldn’t have left it to the police to do their jobs
What do you think he did that led to abuse of kids?

No I haven’t - but equally having worked in education for 20 years we don’t wait 12 years to do fuck all when it comes to safeguarding.

As leader of that organisation he failed every victim.

An author who profiled John Smyth and detailed his abuse within the Church of England, says that the Archbishop of Canterbury’s resignation is unlikely to bring about change.

Speaking to BBC News, Andrew Graystone says he worries that Justin Welby’s decision to quit shows the church is “ungovernable”.

Criticising a culture of “cover up and secrecy”, Graystone says that since Welby took up his post in 2013, the archbishop had tried to bring about change around safeguarding.

But, the author says “this hasn’t made a difference”, and advocates for safeguarding in the Church to be placed in the control of an independent body with expertise in the area.

As a result, he suggests that Welby's resignation alone won't be enough to improve the safeguarding culture within the Church."Throwing one archbishop under a bus and replacing them with another isn’t going to change that," he adds.
