In the contest with Gerrard, it was always Gerrard (the better and more varied player) who had to give way because Lampard could only do one thing - attacking midfield - but was no good in a defensive role. At least Gerrard could do that, or had to completely give way to a specialist defensive midfielder like Gareth Barry. Formation was drive in part by Lampard's limitations
Sheaf has been indifferent all season, hope I am wrong but can see him being hauled off for Allen on the hour as we will have 2 'sitting' midfielders getting in each others way.
I still think we will get a result tonight though. And as others have said, our bench has been weaker than this at this stage of the season in recent years. If Simms and Wright are up for it and get any kind of service, we will be fine.
