If your kids are of the age or have the relevant disciplines join that Gravy train .
Before it gets too far in can I suggest they future proof with double decker hardware .

Really want double decker trains, am jealous of the Dutch for that, though the missus is jealous of our double decker buses so works both ways I guess.

Irrespective of the environmental impact and monumental waste of money of this ridiculous vanity project, there will be work locally in the skilled trades for the next 15 years or so.
I lived near Heathrow when they were building Terminal 5, and you couldn't find a decent bricky, carpenter, plumber or sparky for love nor money, as they were all getting paid handsomely on that 5 year programme.

£50k pa just on the labouring on that one.

I don't get the issue. all I keep hearing is spend it on the NHS, spend it on Education. A tired line for any argument that costs.

Let's spend only on the NHS and Education and see the state of repair the roads and rail etc soon get into. Projects cost money, yes this is a lot, but the Victorian networks we have mean it's inevitable as we've fallen so far behind other countries in terms of clean, safe, affordable and on time travel.

That would be fine if we did spend it on the NHS or education, but we don’t. We spend it on tax cuts. Brexit/AV campaigns all over again.

I’m not fussed either way on HS2, generally a fan of infrastructure projects and it seems to have been examined inside and out by experts so happy for it to go ahead.

Does this guarantee the next stages go ahead in the future?
I see in todays bulletin's it will knock 30 mins off the journey up to Brum.
Half of that must be due to not stopping anywhere.
My question really is ,does this deliver improvement numbers wise to the other line ,or Will people still be forced to pay for seats ,when in reality it's often cattle class?

increases overall capacity (which I think helps with commercial/freight rail as well - don’t quote me). Sure I’ve seen that Bham to London never runs near capacity anyway though as services are regular/plenty carriages etc

they are reviewing the northern section, I think it will be scrapped and replaced with better standard rail network

I agree with infrastructure projects that benefit the country, however, I personally would’ve started this from North down rather than South up, as Bham to London isn’t too bad at the moment but Birmingham to North is poor (as is inter city rail in North). Too late now though !

We don't need to get to London faster. We need to connect all the other parts of the country where it still takes ages to get anywhere by public transport if it even exists.

It's a means of increasing London's airport capacity. Why do you think it's first connection is at an interchange with BHX? It's got fuck all to do with getting people to the north. It will be reviewed once that first section is done and scrapped.

Personally I think it needs more focus on E-W if you genuinely want to invigorate the north.. Yorks-Lans into N. Wales. Anglia into Bristol and S-Wales. Then look to connect those two.

Not for HS2 but at least they'll be plenty of work for me!

I’m attend HS2 project meetings because of the impact on who I work for. I can’t believe the height it is coming into Brum city centre at. I’m 5 floors up and it’s pretty much level with my office.... completely blocked my view of Brum city centre. Every cloud has a silver lining

There was something on the radio this morning reporting that Boris was emphasising the mantra of dividing wealth more evenly between London and the regions. The best way to do that would be to abandon plans for the southern (Brum to London) end of HS2 (that's just a means to get MORE wealth into London), and focus entirely on connecting the "Midlands Engine" and the "Northern Powerhouse" (wanky meaningless terms which i despise with a vengeance, by the way), and improving the trans-Pennine route with HS3. The talk has always been about getting people TO London faster (and with it the wealth), rather than getting people to the regions faster. Leave London out of it altogether.
