For the first time on Saturday after watching the same old dross, I took the bride and the boys to a different sporting event in Coventry. The Coventry blaze ice hockey were in trouble as some of their sponsorship money had not materialized. We bought a family ticket for £30 and took our seats for the 7pm face off, the game didnt finish until 9.30 so for 2 and a half hours of fast and furious action we certainly got value for money. The crowd was made up of all age of Coventry folks who were encouraged to stand up shout and make as much noise as possible and generally get involved on what was going on on the ice. The distinct lack of orange coated thugs telling people to sit down and shut up was a refreshing change, their were over 2000 fans in the all seated arena. The team responded to this in a positive manner and returned the applause of the fans at the end of the game and were available to sign autographs and talk to the kids after the match, a good night was had by all.

This puts in sharp focus the sterile atmosphere of Saturday afternoon and the way SISU and ACL treat our clubs fans. The ice hockey guys genuinly engage with the crowd on so much more of a community level. People are encouraged to participate and show their support for their heroes and people dug deep to buy raffle tickets to win prizes to support the club in its time of need. No one in their right mind would do the same at our club while the present owners remain in power. Sisu have dragged the club that far down you feel you can not stand shout and support our great club without being ejected from the ground for being passionate.

It just goes to show the narrow minded idiots on the board of our club what a real club should be like, they are the custodians of a never ending community spirit that should ignite a fire in everyones belly on a Saturday afternoon at 3 oclock. Ken and Onye have turned that flame in to a spluttering damp squib and deny any culpabilty, after Saturdays fractious comments from Clarkey he is not far behind. Do you think the coach of the blaze, who also coaches Great Britain would have any interfearance on his bench.

The main point is this, until we have new ownership we will continue on this downward spiral through the leagues. As everyone on the board does not seem to think that product on the pitch is governed by the quality of the players you invest in which in turn supplys a product that fans want to see. If you want something to do on a Saturday night and remember the good times we had at Highfield road. If you want to stand up for the team and shout and sing with out fear of reprisal. If you want to see professional players give something back and appreciate the fact that you pay their wages, you could do worse than visit the Blaze. They appreciate the fact that you have a voice and care for their club, plus they need the money at the minute and you might even like it.
