Try asking the question to those who want us to spend 100m or more buying players without considering the wage bill and what our finances could be. I haven't managed to get an answer so far.

Exactly. The wage bill will increase massively without signing 1 player. Not sure exactly what some think the level of TV money is but it’s not infinite. I’m sure King will do the right thing whatever the pressure is to spaff millions.

But once on contracts, they have a resale value

So are the Leicester players that didn't do as well as expected and nobody is willing to take them on after they got relegated.

Most fans (including me) wanted to pocket half the Vik cash and buy a few £1-2m players. Thank goodness King didn’t listen and knew what needs to be done to get where we want to go.

Exactly, let’s leave King and Lampard to sort out business after promotion. Both have shed loads in the bank to make those decisions.

They will also have a better idea of funds available and I can't see it being 100m + and a massive wage bill on top. We're already running at a loss without spending every penny we receive for promotion on new players and a massive wage bill on top unless we get a massive cash boost from somewhere.

The odds are many are going to have a reality check.

I'm not sure about that. Every transfer window you seem to have a wishlist to replace and dismantle half the team. Thankfully FL chose not to do that in the Summer. I can't dislodge the memory of you desperate for us to sign Panzo for 2 years before we actually did, so luckily as you point out other more informed persons will be making our recruitment decisions.

Yeah man I haven’t got access to the budget so I just say who I think the squad needs. Sorry I’ve not been following your posts closely enough to tell you which random player didn’t work out I guess?

Success is predominantly underpinned by a strong management / coaching team, and a prudent / canny owner (or a rich one). If those foundational elements are right, then it ultimately enables the team to invest in the playing squad over time and improve performances (within a particular system).

So, ultimately, I think the coaching set up is the most critical, particularly when you look at recent success stories from Champ to PL:

Sunderland: Regis Le Bris
Forest: Steve Cooper

Then the teams that are overachieving after a management change:

Villa: Unai Emery
Palace: Oliver Glasner
Everton: Moyes

Our greatest investments were always Robins and Viveash (+ Lawrence) and now Lampard and Edwards.

We should give them whatever we can afford - or even a bit beyond that, to be realistically competitive - and trust it to them.

Over time, I think that will prove to be our most successful strategy; whether we survive in the Premier League, become a YoYo club, or settle into life as an established / top Championship club.

If we get bought by a Billionaire, then we can shoot a bit higher. If we don’t, then we can’t, and that’s fine with me too.

When you say 'we', have you even the foggiest notion of who you are referring to?
IF we do win promotion, put a price on this Premier League club that owns its own ground.
Quick summer sale to the highest bidder in a very long queue and the answer is around 6 -700 million to chance finishing 4th bottom.
And if that baby comes in, some lucky f***er has hit the jack pot!

Now is the moment I think, make some investment for a stake then do the full deal at season's end?
Then whoever gets it is onto a chance to make it big if the management stays the same hopefully,of course Doug could just carry on.

That's hypothetical because to spend what you think we need to spend, and that will take our income for the year. You then have to find the money to pay 50k a week per player. The monthly bills including wages would be in the millions. Who pays them unless we get extra funding.?

So no, I'm not expecting us to spend 100m on new signings. But I would be delighted to be wrong. All we can do is wait and hope just like for the window before the season started. No big signings but every player wanted was kept. We started the season with a very good squad but many couldn't see it and had us to finish this season mid table. We've had some big injuries but have kept going.

I would expect the same to happen if and when we go up. We check what our budget is and build a squad with it. Lampard could be given 70m or 80m to build a squad and decide where the money would be best spent. We most probably already have a few foreign targets. We would be fishing in a different water than before. Our previous foreign bargains were at the cheap end of the market and we've done well out of it. 5m or so abroad will get you a lot more than in the UK.

Welcome to the world of getting promoted to the Prem and trying to stay up. Haven't you ever considered why most promoted sides go straight back down unless a side or two have a bad season.

I trust Lampard to give us a chance of staying up. Either we're at the level of Leeds last season or the Championship is dogshit this season. FA cup time coming up. Games between Championship and Premier sides will give us a clue.

Merry Christmas

The premier league comes with riches that allow higher transfer fees and a larger wage bill. If we want to go route of spending more to have a better squad and increased chance of staying up the option is there

So let me get this straight, some of you want to follow Luton’s model? They are 8th in league one a couple of years after getting promoted to the premier league. Quite frankly I hope we do the opposite to the Luton approach.
The money you get for promotion means we can easily spend a lot of money without jeopardising the clubs future. Doug King isn’t stupid.
He doesn’t just want promotion, he wants to stay there. He’s said all along he wants us to be an established premier league club. If the likes of Brighton, Fulham, Brentford and Bournemouth can compete at that level why can’t we?

Of course increased chance of staying up. That's not staying up. If you fail you have a season to go up otherwise you're against 3 new sides with more money.

Spend what we can afford. A couple of quality signings would make a big difference. We don't need stars all over the pitch to survive. If we didn't stay up we would go down with a strong squad and with money to spend. This probably means another promotion but now with a much stronger side and all the money to spend again. That gets you well over 100m in players with money left over and much less risk.

At least. 70m to 80m would be enough if you go to the right places. Maybe sign a star player (for us) and build around what we have. There will be a few available on a free, normally older experienced players. Get a couple of decent ones from here and we're laughing.

You cannot say increased chances of staying up doesn't mean staying up but then say increased chances of going back up means probably means another promotion.

If we came back down with the best of our players plus another 80m of talent on top and more money to spend. If any players are sold it would be for big money. That's how the solid yo-yo clubs are built.

There’s no such thing as a solid yo yo club. Most end up back midtable in the championship losing millions a year.

Once they start to gamble yes. That's what's done Sheffield United and Leicester. Run out of money with players on big contracts.

You ideally want one or two experienced premier league players, then try and find younger talent that could have great sell on value. Basically an upgraded version of what we have now

So us keeping our best players and adding 80m of talent would leave us in a bad place in the Championship? Having a bit more money for further improvement? Being one of them sides you know are going straight back up.

Or do what Sheffield United and Leicester have done. Spent a lot and no money left with a big wage bill. Sell players to keep going.

Won't be long before we find out.

Like we knew southampton and Ipswich were going back up? Or Luton?

There is literally no guarantee we will be "one of them sides"
