A wealthier club might be able to afford a £2+ million dart throw, but given the size of the squad and the cost/impact of players like Bobby Thomas or Sakamoto, I think it’s hard to justify the use of funds on Bassette.

Why? He shown promise early on. Can clearly see he’s got attributes that we can work with.

I doubt it has. His inclusion was due to injuries to others. He needs a loan in League One next season to push on.

He was (understandably) not at the required standard and I doubt he will be next season either. It’s all well and good saying he’s one for the future, but the money we spent on the investment demands a return sooner than what we’re currently getting - it might be in the third year of his contract at this rate.

What’s more, the team is in ‘win now’ mode. The money would have been much better spent on a similarly priced player like Torp, Sakamoto or Thomas who is actually ready to contribute on day one. Get promoted first and then we can start throwing around millions of pounds on Euro prospects.

Torp wasn't ready to contribute from day one, his performances early this season were poor.

But he's really improved as the seasons gone on, hopefully Bassette will do the same.

At his age he needs to be playing regularly. I’d like to think he’ll be pushing for a loan himself to actually play next season.

I wouldn’t do either but you’d hope his time next season will be limited if we’re going to get promoted…I also can’t see him wanting to sit on the bench for the season either.

I think that’s harsh on Torp, who was a regular starter from the get-go, and made many important contributions last season.

Bassette meanwhile has got worse as the season’s gone on.

I'm not putting Torps contribution on a par with Bassette, hes clearly been more first team ready since he arrived.

But he's definitely gone up several levels under Lampard and I still think there's more to come. I still think he struggles a bit with the physicality of the league.

I'm hopeful Bassette can show similar levels of improvement.

And therein lies my point - I’m not opposed to making a sizeable investment in a player with room to grow, as long as they can make the team better while we wait for them to become the finished article.

Wright ad Simms are going. Wright and especially his wife are not happy in the area and Wright wants to move to a bigger club with a higher profile to maximise his chances of playing for the USA at next year's World Cup. Can't begrudge him that and he has been a brilliant signing for us. King should try and hold out for £20 million as strikers with his goalscoring pedigree are not easy to get.

Simms tested Lampards patience once too often that's obvious. If we can get 5 million for him snap whoever offers it hands off

Bassette won't be sold..more likely he is loaned out to a L1 club.

BTA will be retained if he is happy as a squad player. If not he will need moving on but doubt we get more than 1.5 million.

We have no money compared to half of the league. After the emotion of the play offs, now the dust has settled i think next season is mid table season of consolidation. We are a Championahip club. This is our level given our finances so really making the play offs is punching above our weight.

My take is based on their last season’s form and input which was sporadic at best. Simms looked pretty awful for most of the season and BTA showed glimmers of talent but generally looked clueless when starting. Hope I’m proved wrong but they’re not going to get anyone promoted automatically.

But ofter Torp didn't.
His performance on the opening day was dreadful. But he's now kicked on.

And in this day and age, is 2 million, (if that is what we paid), a sizable investment?

It's not insignificant but it's not a fortune either.
Uncovering a Gyokeres for just over a million is once in a blue moon stuff. I still think Bassette can come good and justify the fee.

Torp has made far more valuable contributions to the team in his first 25 games than Bassette has, let’s be realistic here.

There are only so many £2 million players we can sign, and to make one of them be a player who may not make a positive impression here until the 26/27 season is a waste, when we are currently one of the teams in the mix for promotion and need to prioritise winning now.

Bassette is being tracked across Europe. He’s in a watchlist so will become an asset for us.

He needs to play though and either he plays a big part next season or we loan him to the Scottish Prem or another season in the Jupliar.

Scotland isn’t a bad idea for Bassette. Mika Biereth went to Motherwell on loan from Arsenal and did well and is now one of the hot new strikers in Europe

We pretty much spent the same on BTA. I'm far more disappointed on that investment than I am on a 19 highly rated youngster who will undoubtedly be a player. You don't get to play in the Belgium u21s and get a full senior cap if you haven't got something about you. Let's not forget, he came here a 19 year old living in a different country playing in a different league. It's not easy for season pros to adapt to that let alone a youngster.

How can you say its a waste if he becomes a 15-20 goal striker and his value rockets?

He clearly has some good attibutes, we'll end up kicking ourselves if he fulfills his potential elsewhere.
It's not like getting rid of him now will give us enough money to buy guaranteed quality anyway.

We take punts on players, some work, like Vik and Hamer, some don't, but it's what we do.

Of course it wouldn’t be a waste, but sorry to say there’s also a growing chance he’ll grow up to be a £2 million Fabio Tavares instead.

We almost never take punts of this size on players who don’t also contribute to the first team in some shape or form.

And I doubt we'll do so again going forward.
But now that Bassette is here I think we should see how he develops.
We wont get much for him currently and I doubt he's on a fortune, I think we should persevere with him.

At risk of pissing off those who hate xG for some reason...

Bassette was in the 97th percentile for npxG per 90 in the league this season. Fairly small sample size at 907 mins, but that is a very positive indicator for a striker. I think it's generally accepted that it's easier for someone who gets chances to start converting them than it is for a player who doesn't get chances to start getting them. Still not convinced personally but I think there could be something worth persisting with there.

At least one of BTA/Simms has to go, probably both. Generating £4m+ from those two would be decent.

Doug will flip BTA for slightly more than paid

Bassette is going nowhere other than a loan

Haji unless someone comes in with 15 plus is also going nowhere

Simms is the one we are actively looking to shift out, our initial outlay was only 3.5 million, not hit any of the add ons, so if anyone is to come in with 5 or 6 hes being dropped off there

Crackers that anyone would think we weren't actively trying to move on BTA and Simms. Blindingly obvious neither fit in here.

People forget how quickly you can develop at Bassette's age and need to give him a chance.

Callum Wilson looked shite at the end of his first season albeit mainly in cameos. Came back the next season as the best striker in the league

So I see it like this....

Simms, I highly doubt we will recoup what he cost us. So I'd say if we got an offer anywhere in the region on £1m I'd take it. We won't get much more and it's better to take something than to let him run down his contract, losing money on wasted wages, and get nothing for him at all. Any offer, I'd seriously consider.

BTA, I would personally hold on to. Granted, he's not a 20 goal a season starter, but, as shown against Middlesbrough, can come on off the bench and look threatening. We can't just offload every player that's not played minutes, we need a deeper squad. I see BTA as a half decent squad player so would hold on for now....... unless a silly offer came in which is unlikely.

Wright, I imagine we could get between £10-15m for him. Unfortunately though I imagine it'll be to a Leicester or Southampton. And it'll be written in the stars that he WILL switch it on in a crucial game after that pathetic showing over 2 legs for us. I can see it coming back and biting us in the arse.
