The new Sky Blues boss revealed one of the assurances he was seeking during his pre-contract negotiations was that Ryton is smartened up to provide a professional working environment that will help to inspire the current staff and attract fresh talent to the club.
“Some of the discussions have been about changing the environment where players come to work,” said the 51-year-old manager, who is also determined to improve the match-day atmosphere at the Ricoh Arena.
“When they come back into this building at Ryton in the pre-season and next year they’ll see the place with a lick of paint and some branding on it – Coventry City colours. It will be a place where players will want to come to work and feel proud that they play for Coventry City.
“We’re building from the bottom really, and sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can see new things. If you have lived in this environment for many years you just accept it and get on with your work.
"Hopefully my fresh eyes that have come in and said this needs to change, that’s not good enough or correct and, without being critical of anybody, just try to take it in a different direction – what I believe is a better direction – where players can flourish.
“We have to create that on the playing field but we also have to create it in the dressing room, in the canteen and in the kit room. It’s a workplace and it has to have excellence because how can I demand excellence from the players and talk about promotion if they don’t come to work in an environment that shows excellence, that shows it’s being looked after and we have a pride in where we go to work.
“It’s basic things, basic business things. Wherever you go to work hopefully there’s a professionalism – the workforce needs to be motivated and inspired and any workforce has to have a worth and be treated properly.
“In the budgets we have got – and we aren’t Premier League or Championship – we give the players the very best we can afford so they have no excuses come match day.
“And they have to go and perform. Let’s remove all the excuses.”
He added: “The dressing rooms need a lick of paint, the car park has potholes everywhere and it needs changing – if it means redirecting a few quid off the pitch into the environment where the players come to work and then we build the team then I think it’s worth it because otherwise you never get out of where you live.
“It’s trying to move the football club on. And then when we try to sign young players from the Premier League and their coaches or assistant managers come down and have a look and watch them they see a training ground with a bit of excellence about it and think they are in good hands.
“Then they think they can send another young player here because they do it properly at Coventry.
“Steve Waggott is probably sick of me spending all his money. I just want things doing – how much is a tin of paint?
“In an ideal world there would be an army of Coventry City fans wanting to come down and put the building back into shape, whether that’s painters, tilers, roofers, guys who change windows – whatever it might be – but when the players come back in July hopefully the place will be a different environment for them.”
Mowbray also wants to create more of a sense of identity at the Ricoh, something he feels has been lost since the arrival of Wasps.
“Around the dressing room area and the tunnel area there’s nothing to suggest it’s Coventry City’s home where we go to battle once a fortnight,” he said.
“So we need to brand it a little bit. Wasps brand the stadium very well when they play.
“Players need to have a pride, a cause to fight for. To walk into the building, into the dressing room, into the tunnel it’s important they see the history of the club that they are representing.”

Pleased to see that at least some on hear read exactly what's going on and digest it unlike the first couple of posters.
It's time to stop knit picking and move forward in a much more positive way just for a change and back the manager and what he's trying to do. Onwards and upwards!
hang on, you were telling us to back SP as chopping and changing was no good. Isnt he partially to blame for the state of the training ground ?, after all, he was the manager !
Now while I don't disagree with TM, this thread might be worth bookmarking for if we're going badly, and the accusation that we're wasting time and resources on pointless things like potholes in car parks, when we should be signing a left back...
And if it's all going swimmingly I guess you'll be pulling it up to congratulate TM on the painting and decorating and pot hole filling?
As I said, I don't necessarily disagree with him.
But I'd wager when it comes down to it, given the trend on this board is that we should spend any money on players and not on off-field items, a few defeats now sees an easy target to throw mud at the manager.

Yes. I'm sure the facilities at Walsall, Fleetwood and Southend are massively superior to Ryton.

Did I read that correctly? Coventry tradesmen are supposed to fix for free the infrastructure multi million pound hedgefund Sisu have allowed to decay? A hedgefund that's used the club to try and blackmail a charity and the council into selling them the Ricoh at huge discount. Sometimes words fail me.
Slightly off topic but I've been reading about Bristol City's ground redevelopment, the home of the football club and the new home of Bristol rugby club from next season.
its going to be a wonderful ground and shows how a top rugby club and a club the same size as ours can share facilities and build a future TOGETHER

it it can be done as I'm sure Swansea and Ospreys share as well though I'm not certain on this
