Has anyone noticed how many Cov/Warks boys are in tonights squad? Makes you proud to see so many local lads playing for their local club.

Don't care if they build a winning team. Just need to bring the club home now.

We'd have struggled to have signed anyone better than Wilson's contribution tbf

When you invest in youth, you need to wait at least five years before it pays off. We have Ranson to thank for this golden generation. Was it last year that we downgraded the academy and started fucking around paying the rent?

IIRC, a new youth system was brought in nationwide last year and CCFC attained Category 2 status (the second highest and better than most clubs at this level). As I understand it, that could have been under threat if the club had stayed away from the Higgs Centre too long as other places in the area don't have the required facilities, but the club returning to the Higgs Centre should ensure that threat doesn't materialise.

Spot on. Can't argue with you there at all. We are lucky to have him and hope we get to keep him for a couple of years.

it is about putting confidence and belief - remember when Andy Thorn was forced to play the youth

I believe that the level we are at league one football is the level that our academy can sustain without ccfc having to out source players. Yes we could get promoted with the current team but not this season, because a few injuries are likely to derail a play off push.
Whether the academy can sustain us in the championship is another topic.

It's ironic that a thread is posted hailing our fantastic "homegrown" side..when it isn't playing at home.

The guy who wanted to close the academy? No.

Attaining Category 2 status was key so the people we must thank are those who funded it, we know who they are.

But looking at our 'spine':

J.Clarke Webster
Thomas Fleck
Wilson L.Clarke

Half are from Coventry, then there's Daniels, Christie, Haynes, Maddison (looking like he could be another good player) Lobjoit & Garner (not so much) coming through as well, which is a massive achievement for us and SP, clubs all over the country should follow the SP model, no way would MR, or past managers would have had the same faith in our youth as SP, amazing.

Don't usually see eye to eye with you on most things. But agree about MR and how everyone should follow the SP way.

Also Lobjolt and garner didn't come through our youth system. Garner from Man U and Lobjolt from Mk dons

I think the new FA commission should study us closely as this season were proving that youth in England is good enough, it's not an instant thing over last few years its been a slow injection of youth it hasn't been instant and in my opinion it makes watching 10x more enjoyable watching people my age (19) and some of them I know personally rather than watching a 30 year old washed up championship player on 10k a week. It's just a shame that these coventry lads can't get to play in coventry but can't fault there commitment to the cause. All hail Pressley and the lads!

I remember that being one of the main points we heard when Pressley took over, that he was keen on blooding youngsters through at Falkirk with the idea being that he'd have little choice here. There's truth in that with the average age of the squad surely dipping quite drastically since last season, but it's looking canny so far (touch wood, fingers crossed, mum's the word IDST)

I wonder if Jeffers was just coming through now rather than treading water a few years how he'd do? I was always waiting for him to come good and then Wilson's just sprung out of nowhere instead.

Yeah, when we saw him talk at the Trust meeting at the Squirrel meeting in April, he was constantly talking about bringing players through. That was his <Scottish accent> football philosophy</Scottish accent>.

Great manager.

Who was the fairly recent manager we had who'd keep the youth players completely away from the first teamers or make them 'earn' the exalted position of training with David Bell? I've embellished a little but it was something divisive and counter-productive. I want to say Boothroyd?

Wasn't it that you had to have so many starts to be able to get into the first team changing room other wise you are seperate?

It was something like that yeah. I don't know if it was some kind of weird 'earn your stripes' incentive but it just smacked of an us and them kind of thing in the writeups.

In the Championship we were forced to play with some youngsters and the lack of experience shone through with them. But now, they are actually experienced players and helping the other academy players through. If you look at Thomas, Jordan and Christie they've all been round the first team for a while. Experience clearly helps and they have the ability. If we went up to the Championship we'd have to add in a couple of areas and certainly have a bigger squad but I think the first team could give most Champ teams a game.
