Where does he fit this season?
We finished last season in a 4-2-3-1, in preseason we’ve appeared to play 4-3-3. So far, in his area we’ve lost Bright and Thomas, and brought in Kastaneer and Jobello. Whatever happens with the rest of our transfer business, it would be very harsh if he’s not in the team against Southend imo, but what position is his best?

Left of the three, or 1

I don’t think he can play down the middle, unless perhaps it is with another striker, something we didn’t do last season.

I think he can without doubt his movement is brilliant with the right players either side of him no reason he won’t do well central.

Maybe as part of a front three. He is not a target man or hold up player in the way that Biamou is.

Left of a front 3 or in the middle but if he’s not alongside a bigger man then just needs a better quality of ball. He’s not going to win aerial battles with the ball aimlessly pumped up the pitch but think he could thrive off low crosses, through balls and a few over the top where he can beat defenders with his pace.

A few times last season I think we were trying to play him more as a winger and he doesn’t suit hugging the line.

I can only see him being on the bench if we have a fully fit squad available.

Mental to bench our top scorer

I think hes useful out on the left wing, but can he play the number 10 role? The big question for me is who's going to hit 20+ goals for us? I'm slightly worried we seem to be putting faith in Chaplin, Bakayoko and Biamou.

Putting faith in any one player getting 20 plus goals is a stupid plan

I'd expect up to 2 more players comming in, hopefully Bright, and another striker, and I would then expect Chaplin to go.
In which case Hiwula would make do with a place on the bench.

Being top scorer last season means nothing, other than the fact that he was the best of a very very poor bunch.
Theres hardly been a queue of championship clubs bidding for him.

Mental he was our top scorer.
Far more of a threat out wide

Some goal scorers do better when not straight through the middle and able to sit between players who might pick them up.

Hiwulas scoring record over his career is way ahead of either Jobello or Kastaneer who might take that role.

Yep, not questioning his past scoring record, just the fact i thought he performed a lot better out-wide compared to down the middle. I'll be honest, after seeing him play 10 times, i wouldn't have thought he'd be our top scorer. But i like him now!

Agreed, I was very critical of me but he proved me wrong. He’s definitely the biggest goal threat in the squad and I’d be amazed if he isn’t first choice. Out of interest, does anyone know how many of his goals came in the spell he played down the middle? I would guess at around half.

No, he can't play no.10 as he ain't got the skill set required, coming in from the left or centrally are his best positions.

Bit like McSheffrey, to some degree (playing left and scoring a few).

He could comfortably play the lone striker role, albeit dependent on the style of football we play, and who plays 10.

His movement is very good, as is his technical ability (even if it too some a while to realise), so he could suit playing up front, but we’d need to ensure we’re playing football behind him and looking for through balls, intricate football around the opposition as opposed to long ball or aimless punts into the channel.

I said it on another thread a while ago, but the following seems a strong L1 attacking unit to me:

Jobello Bright/Bayliss Kasteneer
Hiwula

If we were to sign a marquee striker then Hiwula may be dropped to the bench, but through no fault of his own.

Surely he’s going to start wide left and the French and Dutch lad are competing for wide right.

You’d think finding a striker who can score 20+ is easy. We need about 3 players who can score 10+ goals, Hiwula is one, you need Chaplin/Bakayoko to make 2 or 3 and Kastaneer or Jobello to make up the rest. Could do with Bayliss and Allen hitting 5+ goals.

We finished above about 9 teams who had players with 15+ goals.

I like the idea of 3 competing for 2 spots on the wings.

As it stands I think we'll start

Hiwula - Baka - Kastaneer
Allen - Kelly - Bayliss

I think MR's ideal would be

----------Walker
Jobello - Bright - Kastenner
-------Allen - Kelly

I’d not dismiss Jordy Hiwula from the plans yet, this is the first season I believe he’s remained at a club for a continuous second spell given he left Huddersfield last summer so not doing the usual of going out on loan at another club under another manager and adapting to a different playing style again.

I feel that should help him kick on to have a better season hopefully and bring a better goal return.

For me he’s good for a minimum 9-12 league goals over a season. His match minutes over the last three seasons in L1 alone suggest he’s a consistent 1 in 3 man.

I’d not place him in a set position either as if we play 433 I think it will be a more fluid front line than just occupying the LW position.

So if that’s his ideal why wouldn’t he play Jobello in how you think we’ll start?

I’m wondering if he’d sell Hiwula to push Bright through.

Also Hiwula is the biggest goal threat we know of in the 3 whereas walker and Bright should be dangerous in the 4 so he could play the players that seem to be more creative.

Hiwula doesn’t deserve to be dropped from the start for a player who’s unproven in England.

Ok. Well, While I’m hoping we get Bright I wouldn’t like to sell hiwula. I also think Hiwula could do a job upfront.
Has talk of Chaplin going died down or have I missed something?
