Yep looks like the pub at the far end to the left of the works ,with Paynes lane running along the frontage AJ

Dutchman would like this site. Don't know if he already knows about it. Have you seen his site? Really well worth a look if you like the history of Coventry (not just the club!)

I reckon the Brittainia Mills building in Paynes Lane was later called "Draftex" and the pub was The Oak :thinking about:

Ok need some help here please in orientation... the Stand directly at the top of the photo would be where the old sky blue stand stood, Thackhall street directly behind... making the top right hand the spion kop (directly under the word "profiles")?

Not sure I agree with you, ohitsaid & ajsccfc. I know I'm old and my memory may be playing tricks, but if the spion kop is under the word Profiles, then diagonally across the pitch is where I used to stand after going through the turnstiles at the end of King Richard Street. I can see no evidence of King Richard Street; it was quite short and was off Far Gosford Street; where is that? Where is Gosford Green? I can't see any sign of the railway bridge that I am sure I had to go under to get to the library that was a little bit further up Far Gosford Street towards Ball Hill. I'm confused (but fascinated). I might get my older brother to have a look - he is well up on the history of Coventry.

If you take the orietation from the east aspect in the Photograph from the midpoint ,that basically follows Swan lane route back towards Gosford Green SBD

Did'nt that far corner have a slope on the pitch ?

This is how I see it:

Red - Swan Lane (I assume that's a bridge for the old rail line just above?)
Yellow - Thackhall Street
Squiggly Blue - West Terrace

That look right?

To extend further and also dazzle with my frankly stupendous graphical artistry:

I'd make the black line roughly Walsgrave road, the brown the railway/now-A444, and Gosford Green self-evident in blotchy form:

I think that's more or less right. Or possibly I've got the whole thing upside down and miles off.

Still trying to get my head round it, aj - but I agree with your positioning of Swan lane, Thackall St and West Terrace. However, I think that Gosford Green is where the factory in the middle of the photo stands.

I don't think that old shot has the scale to include Gosford Green; assuming road layouts are pretty much the same I make it as the factory being where the red square is here so then you've got where St. Mary's school used to be near the bottom, and Gosford Green should be just about out of shot to the south:

(Excuse the pitch, the man painting the lines on was a bit drunk)

The Britain from above website is a fascinating site, I could spend hours on there. Plenty of other football grounds for other teams are also covered, but what interests me is how many now established stadiums in built up areas would have been classed as an 'out of town' build. Taking into mind that this is how stadiums like the Ricoh are now seen and derided in some cases, over time, areas and population expansion will see the area develop.

Take Twickenham for example

Apologies to all - I was mistaken, and can see it now. The houses in the bottom right hand corner of the photo are on Walsgrave Road. In my memory, the walk from Walsgrave Road up King Richard Street was very short, so I put Walsgrave Road where Brittania Street is. All the fault of a failing memory (plus a couple of shots of decent vodka and some rather good New Zealand Cabernet Sauvignon).
