The club's record sale came in August 2000, when they sold Robbie Keane to Inter Milan for £13 million. The sale of Chris Kirkland to Liverpool for £6 million in 2001 set a British record transfer fee for a goalkeeper and the sale of Phil Babb also to Liverpool in 1994 set a British record transfer fee for a defender

According to online calculator 3.23 million... But Wallace's 1.25 million 4 years later is only about 6.5 million

We paid that much for him and he played 2 games. Dropped after the first game and eventually went to the Portland timbers never playing in England again.

We paid £250,000 on Dave jones at the same time and he didn't do a lot better. £600,000 wasted at a time the club had no money. Very odd times.

Very strange the Gary Collier episode. He was an excellent player at Bristol City, a mainstay of a decent team yet here he only played a couple of games, his debut at Stoke we got thumped 4-0, played the next at home can't remember who against might have been Middlesbrough, I think we lost and never played again, luckily America were trying to get a professional soccer league going and clubs over there were splashing cash about and we got our money back for him. Back to record signings we have been involved in a few Bill Glazier at £35000 was a world record fee for a goalkeeper at the time and Allan Harris who was bought from Chelsea just after also for £35000 was some sort of record. We were also the first club to pay a £100000 for a full back when Noel Cantwell bought Wilf Smith from Sheffield Wednesday. Then Arsenal paid £200k for our Jeff Blockley, a British record for a centre half, I think Gary Gillespie's £325k to Liverpool was a record and Phil Babb's £4million move to Liverpool was definitely a British record for a defender. Robbie Keanes £6 million transfer from Wolves was a record, maybe a world record fee for a teenager. So we have had our moments , will they ever return ?

Jesus Wept, your post is a reminder to anyone who talks down our club. We were a big developing club in that era, Gary Collier et al. Massive potential, regular crowds in excess of 30,000. I get annoyed when our fans talk us down. Someone only has to get it right here, on and off the field and watch us go.
I've heard a story about Gary Collier. At haltime away at Liverpool (the history books say we lost 0-4) Jim Holton said in no uncertain terms he wasn't going to play in the same team as Collier. As you said, Collier never played again for us. Despite having a brilliant reputation on signing. These stories get told, I don't know if it is true, but I've heard it a few times.
Bringing it back to now, the insult of a proposed 12,500 stadium. How can any self respecting City fan even contemplate that. An insult.

Pretty much every team does, Man U sold Ronaldo and Beckham, Spurs sold Bale. As long as we get a decent price, and the money stays with the club, then I'd be happy with that.

I remember when we sold Kirkland that was a record for a goalkeeper at the time. I heard a rumour at the time that the bank took a large chunk of the money, and might even have been pushing for the sale. No idea if that's true it was just a rumour - sounded plausible though.
