I felt he didnt anticipate the 2 crosses all too well , but aside from that what did he really have to work with ?

He was up against 2 absolute units in egan and ajayi and was smothered the minute he recieved the ball , same as EMC .. they did a great job stopping our threats

One of them he checked his run oddly to look at going far post and fucked up his momentum, it was always the case that he needed to get across the front of the defender for it. Maybe with more match sharpness he's have scored both.

Like people are saying don't think he will give much or get himself injured due to going World Cup ( don't blame him) so it's Simms or Asante up there instead.

I would be surprised if he won it from here - Vipotnik will still have a few goals left in him this season as well

He’s no Haaland for sure but the key difference is Haaland can be totally isolated for large parts of a game yet comes alive at key moments. Wright was on his heels when those crosses came in and didn’t do enough for me to try to link up with others, accepting Torp was not helping! At least Simms tried to make things happen, I just don’t think he has half the ability of Wright.

he goes hot and cold but i cant see why he wouldnt try these games theres no reason for him not to lick you say his got a title to win and then his got a starting place to win for the us and if were talking self interest anyroads that could earn him a massive move with a good world cup so its all in his interests to try

One thing that sums up both Wright and Simms Wright controlled the ball with his chest brilliantly last night turned then couldn't sort his feet out and easily lost the ball.Simms also does similar stuff and is weak as piss and is far to soft, both need to be far more aggressive.

That Ajayi is a very decent/quick centre back too. Almost the perfect defender to mark Haji.

Definitely not a good game for Wright last night - it was a game of almost no clear cut chances at either end so a tough ask for any striker but those two crosses from JDS it felt like his movement and anticipation was way off. He also failed to control / trap the ball multiple times and looked pretty clumsy. Once again, he'll be as frustrated with his performance as anyone.

Just not a good night for him. I do find his inconsistency a bit of a puzzle. I would back Frank to find a way to inspire a player with his ability and ambition - but still he has games and spells of just feeling like he isn't showing up with the right mindset. I will never call him lazy or question his motivation, but there's definitely an issue with how he shows up game after game. To be a top, top player - you have to be consistent. Wright is absolutely not consistent! We need more and he can do more.

That's the thing with quite a few number 9's these days, when they don't score it does look like they don't do a lot but they do a lot of unnoticed work and some good pressing.

No player in our squad is "disinterested". He's got that laid back style / demeanour but he's definitely not disinterested.

It was a tough game, we didn’t create much, poor pitch, Hull countered us really well to be fair and Torp’s ineffectiveness in the #10 didn’t help.

If he looks similarly uninvolved against Wednesday that’s a different story, but otherwise dragging this thread title up is pathetic.

And frankly, Wright doesn’t have to score another goal this season. We can talk about sliding doors, people will point to Onyeka, but his hattrick vs Boro was absolutely massive for us, I doubt we’re in this position without it.

Tbf if you saw the best of Wright on a more consistent basis he wouldn't be in this league for 3 years thats for sure. Honking last night but still a top performer at this level who I think will still be here as our second choice CF next season.

For sure, then we would make a nice tidy profit which we can reinvest. I think we could still sell him in the summer to a champ team or a top league in another country potentially, but feels to me like an opportunity missed for him to take a serious step up.

That he's scored so many this year without really being consistent for long periods I think shows how much he/we could gain by solving this puzzle.

Haji has very obviously still carrying the groin injury. He was limping slightly on Friday, yesterday he still wasn't running freely or willing to stretch it too much. That fact that he's still picked ahead of Simmo says all we need to know!

I'm a fan of Haji and Simms but one thing they both need to do better is make that angled run to the near post to beat a defender to a cross. Rudi does it really well. Attitude should be 'put the cross in a decent area and I'll get myself on the end of it' but they both tend to stand still and expect the cross to hit them

He wouldn't be playing him with a groin injury. For us or with the upcoming world cup.
Haji isn't the best athlete and doesn't have the mental ability to hit the ground running. He needs time to get up to speed and maybe a kick up the arse to motivate him.

I'm sure Simms will go. Haji remains an enigma I guess he'll get his chance in the Premiership. Not convinced though.
Id personally like to see a more aggressive, physical main striker who is a threat at set pieces

The thing for me is that neither are able to hold the ball up effectively, to bring other players in, and take pressure off the defence. Two mitigating factors from last night, as someone said earlier, they were both well marked by aggressive defenders, and the state of the pitch may have hampered control. I just wish they’d use their size to better effect, seem too passive to me. We need, however, some goals from one or both on Saturday and over the remainder of the season.

On the golden boot thing - Haji was well in the running (and still is I think) but was missing when we had our penalties whilst Vipotnik is there all the time to take advantage when Swansea got their Pens.

Not his fault I know but he always seems to be “carrying a slight knock” when a consistent run of games would be what’s needed for a streaky striker like him.

Really hope he is fully fit and not dropped for Saturday and Blackburn/ Portsmouth - could easily get 3/4 goals from those 3 games.

Cmon Haji!! Fucking hate to see this thread appear again.

We'll have a lot less possession next season and we're going to need a striker who can hold the ball up when we're under pressure, I just don't think that Wright is that striker.

He’s no different to any other forward in this league, if you don’t know him by now I’d give up,

You might be right but I've seen Vipotnik mentioned on another thread and he doesn't hold the ball up either, so I hope we don't look to sign him as a possible replacement.

I mean he already has been. IIRC played more PL minutes than anyone in the squad bar Onyeka

To be perfectly frank, we also didn’t need to force the issue, particularly with results going our way earlier in the day. A draw was perfectly fine because we have a banker on Saturday that will all but send us up.

Torp wasn’t at his best but then again, not many players were, it was a cautious performance.
