it won’t be a single lump sum. Most transfers are paid over a period of time. It’s how a club writes off the value of the player.
Typically, the buying club pays the fee over the length of the contract the player signs but not always.
The fee for Suarez was paid to LFC over 5 years as I recall, which outraged Liverpool fans who thought transfers in RL were the same as transfers in Football Manager 99/00.
It can be complicated: firstly Brighton will take their sell on percentage which might be 10-20%.
(WBA had a 50% sell on clause for Ugo Ehiogu years ago)
Then there will be a down payment, then the lump sum paid over a period of time, then all the clauses.

If he absolutely insists on going to Lisbon and 17m is their limit, and so we have to take a price below our own value, then we should try to insist on a 50% sell on clause to make up for it.

Unfortunately, I still think this has a few weeks to pan out yet. Gyokores has only just finished his international duty so will just be taking his holiday now, as will others like Declan Rice whose sale is probably pivotal in West Ham making a move. If as looks likely we are waiting on the sale before deciding who to bring in, there comes a point where it could make sense to accept the 17m price, so as to give MR a better chance to forming a competitive team for next season.

Normally a club already knows if a player is interested before they make a bid.
When Man City bid for Grealish, plenty of Villa fans were stunned when the move happened: they shouldn’t have been surprised. Man City knew Grealish wanted the move well in advance.
There has been interest in Gyokeres but to date, it doesn’t appear that a PL club has lodged a formal bid. It is therefore possible that those clubs know that Gyokeres only wants a move to Lisbon.
Or just possible that WHUFC are waiting to sell Rice before they bid.
Frustrating for us

Sure they’re all aware of what’s going on. If they want him, they need to stick an offer in. Typical Prem clubs fucking about, like arsenal with Rice

I appreciate it’s still possible for the Sky Blues to be forced to accept £17 million for Gyokeres from Lisbon, instead say £20 million from WHUFC, if Gyokeres insists on a move to Portugal. But West Ham can offer Euro football and higher wages. Anything to give Robins extra spending power

Ultimately we decided which offer is acceptable to the club. If West Ham offer more but SL is where Vik wants to go, then they will need to up their offer.

Also this will be wrapped up in the next few weeks. He won’t want to be coming back from pre-season with us.

Yes, but not for Gyokores. Even if he happened to stay with us he wouldn't have to come to pre season training for a few more weeks, as he's only just finished international duty.

Sadly not. If Gyokeres says yes to Lisbon, the club might have to accept the lesser offer.

There are precedents. As discussed the other day, Cov were forced to accept a lower offer for Dion Dublin from Villa, instead of the much higher offer from Blackburn.

Even back then, players had power. That power is arguably stronger now but ultimately, you can’t always force a player to sign for someone

in the Dublin case there was a set amount which when reached he could talk to the club both Villa and Blackburn did that and he chose Villa that is not the case with Vicktor

We had to take the lower price for Dublin as the price was written into his contract. Pretty sure that's not the case with Gyokores.

Dublin had it written into his contract that any offer over a certain amount gave him the right to talk about a move. They offered £1 over the amount.

Yeah but as he has been on international duty he gets extra time to return. I don't think he will be back at Ryton to train may be say his goodbyes

Nowhere near the same, Dublin signed a new contract and was almost immediately offered to Blackburn by our spurious and useless chairman Bryan Richardson for about £7million but Richardson missed or didn’t know that inserted in Dublins contract was any club who offered over £5million could talk to Dublin and crafty Villa offered £5mill+ a pound and got their man.
Richardson should have resigned over that.

Didn’t Arsenal do the same with Suarez? Just £1 more?! But that’s £40 mil or so I think?

Richardson should have resigned a lot time before.

But it proves my point: players decide. If Gyokeres rejects a move to anywhere but Lisbon, you can’t force him to go elsewhere

How?

If we’ve accepted a bid from West Ham not sporting why would he then move to sporting?

Richardson’s ambitions over plain common sense ruined this club. Arena 2000, selling Highfield Road, Ron Atkinson, Gordon Stracham. Paying hefty transfer fees for average players (Daish, Jess, Salako, Richardson).
I liked us more under Phil Neal.
Add to that Richardson failed to keep Keane, Dublin, McCalister and Huckerby at the club..

he is under contract, so no obligation to sell to anybody we dont want to . There is then the risk, however that he sits tight and goes for nothing

Why would they? It's CCFC that would be getting squeezed in that scenario.

I agree with this but v few fans were complaining at the time.
He also brought Dublin, McAllister and Huckerby to the club in the first place (the last of which was sold to pave the way for Keane).

The sooner Gyokeres fucks off the better. I know Gyokeres is selfish and the world revolves around him but thinking him and his agent can dictate the fee is utter narcissism.

Gyokeres is selfish?

He has a contract with us. He has always given 100%. But he is free to turn down any offers given to him. He can't be forced to join a club he doesn't want to go to. He can't be forced to play in a country he doesn't want to live in. If it is us trying to sell him it is us trying to break the contract.

Could you imagine if it was you being told by your employer they want you to leave and work for a certain company and you have no choice on the matter? Would you be happy?

This place is crazy. How can someone go from hero to zero for being truthful? He isn't being greedy. He would most probably earn more staying in England. He seems to have a preference that isn't in England. And many on here have stated the same that he isn't worth 20m or more.

Yes we need to maximise what we can get for him. But he also needs to be happy with the move.

In which case any player that wants a move can rightly choose his new club, the wages offered to him (Likely to be higher due to the reduced fees) etc. it just means that the club gained in signing the player, used his service and then abided by the contract that was agreed between the two parties.

Nothing dishonorable about Dublin moving to villa in that case. Regrets from city about any release clause…maybe? But fair value for the player, given than city agreed it!

The majority of us are aligned to your view. It’s daft for ’New Posters’ ahem to suggest that Gyokeres is over priced, their motives are at least questionable. The price will reflect the best deal possible in a given moment. At the moment City and Gyokeres negotiators are doing their jobs. Both parties have common ground in that they need a deal to be done (contracted to us, but winding down).

But somehow it was missed by that clown Richardson and probably cost the club 2million quid, big money in those days.

I don’t care where he goes, what country, what club etc. but they have to meet the minimum threshold for him. Gyokeres doesn’t have a right to dictate what that threshold is, which is exactly what I was getting at and DK has raised too.

You’ve distorted the water and gone for the emotional point scoring and comparing to employment which isn’t the case. He’s not an employee, he’s a commodity asset on a 3 year contract and if someone externally wants to end that contract and register him, they have to pay what we determine/the market demand for him. Gyokeres is being selfish (self centred) by only seeing that scenario by what’s best for himself.

Yes we sang his name and he was great on the pitch for us, doesn’t mean he’s got a free pass to dictate and disrespect.
