Good. It's the only thing I don't like about horse racing. There was loads of injuries and falls when I was at Cheltenham last month.

Are you saying that they don't enjoy racing?

And if you are so against it what do you think of meat eating people? Do you see it as OK to breed animals to eat them? We don't need to.

You clearly have zero understanding of a horses mentality. Horses are herd animals. The notion that horses "enjoy" racing is a yarn spun by the industry to the gullible and the ignorant. You mentioned horses carry in when riderless and run the course. Total ignorance. Horses are pack animals and are frightened if on their own so they chase after the others.

If horses are grazing in a field and are startled by a noise they converge together and run. If horses enjoy it so much why don't they permenantly jump fences in fields they are kept in?

As for the football comparison its stupid as footballers clearly don't have someone on their back controlling them.

One thing you could answer though - if there was 1.089 jockeys died since 2007 would we still have horse racing do you think?

2 horses are killed on each racing day in the UK. Twenty-two were killed (broken neck etc) or destroyed last month, alone.

The very large majority are slaughtered for meat before they are 5 years old: last year, 7000 were slaughtered for meat, mainly for the French market.

There again, if you’re one an avid countryfile watcher and take comfort from the sight of Adam Henson cuddling a fluffy lamb that will be on your plate in less than 12 months I don’t see that it should really matter.

Which is what I said. Are you happy to eat meat where animals are not allowed to reach proper maturity but unhappy about horse racing where the vast majority of their horses are well looked after? The vast majority of horses used for meat are private horses mistreated. Maybe injured. If you are a veggie I can understand. Otherwise you just contradict what you are saying.

Your comparison to footballers was still ridiculous though.

Agreed, up to a point. I suspect there's a good minority of horses not well looked after, even up to the point of their slaughter.

(And, yes, I am vegetarian, so feel free to vilify me...).

Who said anything about hate? Who said you are wrong to be a veggie?

I said about the meat eaters that say it is wrong. But are happy for animals to be bred just for eating and normally before maturity.

Racehorses are very well looked after throughout their entire lives, there are very few exceptions and those found to be breaking welfare rules are harshly dealt with.
Reiterating some points already made, if they don't want to run they don't, if they don't want to jump they don't. Stables recognise this and respect it, the horses you see are the best, the ones who dont make it dont just simply get sacrificed, there are registration regulations for horses and if they were "disappearing" it would be flagged up, just like if you went missing. Yes they are trained to race but isn't that the case with all walks of life, would anyone here actually be better off without training?
A horse is put down from a broken leg due to massive complexities in attempting to heal, it can be impossible depending on the type of fracture, in alot of cases it would be more cruel to try to heal the horse. Sounds horrible I know but its the truth.
There has always been animal welfare groups trying to ban this race or racing, it has been analysed thoroughly for years and it still gets the go ahead from the authorities.
Those against it can lobby on various sites to add to the numbers but it'll be a waste of time, its actually becoming safer year on year out, verified by the safety of all 40 this year.
If you want to do something about horse cruelty go down the ladder to rich/large landowners who keep horses for a fad and then leave them to rot once the expense and novelty wears thin.
Anyway, lumped on Monbeg Dude. Dammit!

Mick Quinn was fined and banned from being a trainer after mistreating his horses iirc (to try and get this thread Cov related...).

I think he was banned (for 3 years) on the grounds of neglect through a third party (the stable hand), rather than mistreatment.

Bet he's had a few horse pies in his time, though...

I guess it depends on the trainer / owner doesn't it?

The thing I saw on C4 she was saying how she is different as she lets them be horses, they go out into fields like normal horses and play like horses whereas others can be stuck in a stable and only let out to train and then back in.

Same as any animal I guess, you have good owners and bad owners.

Not really. A few say horse racing should be banned as some die doing what they love. Some footballers die doing what they love. Maybe not as many but it happens.

More people die in road accidents than horses die racing. Shall we try to ban cars next?

Driving similarly doesn't apply surely. I mean I could stop driving tomorrow if I wanted, but I can't see how yesterday's winner can request retirement.

I'm fine with horse racing, but it doesn't really have an equivalent in much humans do as we have free will that animals don't.

That all depends on what country you live in though. And all down to religious beliefs a lot of the time. A 9 month old baby has been arrested in Pakistan a couple of days ago. He is accused of planning a murder, threatening police and interfering with state affairs.

Yeah, in his autobiography, he said he got a phone call or turned up one day and there was inspectors there saying he hadn't met standards/mistreating. But from what he wrote, it was a total shock for him, as he loves his horses and gave them good care?

It wasn't a monkey. It was a Sunderland resident. They have not evolved as much as the rest of us.

Sanctimonious pricks out in force on this thread I see. Are you vegans too or just plain old hypocrites (since you have to be one or the other). Were it not for racing the horses wouldn't even be bred, just like the meat on your plate. Get over yourselves and have a punt!

This is a deterministic behaviour fallacy based on religious belief/upbringing/inculcation or ignorance. All animals have a degree of free will or choice. The difference in choice ('free will') between the lower animals and the higher animals (such as humans) is one of degree. The extent of the considerable and very full human behaviour directed through / by the genes tends to be much under-appreciated by society at large (though is very much appreciated in the scientific community).

You're assuming the horse might be intelligent and/or isn't rooted in the concept of original sin.
