Shocking, think of the players we could have got with that.

Does it come out of tax payers money?

So the real cost of cancelling was £120k which is the concessions income that the council wont get. The other costs are the annual costs of putting on the Godiva so you would expect those to be in the annual budget. What they actually pay out is £420K

Will have to pay the bands their fees so why would the council expect additional claims from band management companies ?

Insurance costs would have added a huge amount to the cost of the festival if cover could be obtained at all. The fact that it is a free festival also impacts on the level of cover obtainable I believe. If they insured every year then they probably could not afford to put the Godiva on at all

The estimate given of losses £350k was given on CWR by a council official who didnt want to give an estimate because she wasnt sure how much but was pressed for a figure and said it would be at least £350K .... the £540K is a guess too by CT

we spend it every year Nick ...... lot of people enjoy it ..... brings money into the local economy ..... usually a feel good factor for the City

not sure on some of the figures. Do they mean that total costs are £420K and they then get £120K from site concessions which offsets it ? or do they mean that the annual cost is £420k after including concession income. As usual its all about the headline in the CT with the report being ambiguous

do they actaully pay for this or does it come from an escrow account ?

have they refinanced based on next years attendance

is it likely the festival wont be here next year

does the £120k income go to Godiva Ltd, Godiva holdings, or AGRO ?

What will the council do with the park if we dont have the festival on it ?

are the council looking to sell the swings ?

Could we use Allesley Park ?

Are the council thinking of reducing pitch and putt costs so we can make an informed decision ?

What I would say is that this is a council led event put on and made available at no extra cost to all the citizens of Coventry should they choose to attend...... that is budgeted for each year and is mitigated by concessions and sponsorship.

It is not money put into a private limited company that charges a commercial rate to people to attend the event - for example CCFC - and would not expect to repay anything or even pay the bills

Personally I am glad they put the festival on each year..... hope it continues

Walking past the area this morning, I would say there will still be costs incurred cleaning up the site - or will they just leave the churned up mess that's been left ?

Putting it into context it probably means the cost per council tax payer works out at about £5, not massive in the scheme of things. I do see it as part of the council's brief to promote and raise the profile of the city and events like this can only be positive.

Just a headline figure to stir up a hornets nest in times of recession. A bit like the Royal figures that came out and seem staggering, although in reality costs us approx 52p each per year to have them. I'm not a huge royalist but I think 52p for the income generated by their existence in terms of tourism and standing around the globe makes it a bargain.

agree rob, personally i love the godiva festival! Its a great couple of days with ever increasing quality of bands on and a real nostelga fest with some older ones i.e. echo, space and human league etc. Really gutted that it was cancelled but given the recent death of the Radiohead rodie, they cannot take the chance of something happening which is sensible.

Disagree with you completely on the Royals and when at a computer will refute those misconceptions.

It's been calculated that having a President i.e becoming a republic and the additional politicians/elections required costs far more than a monarchy. As you say the income brought in far exceeds the costs.

Maybe we should do away with Parliament as well then?

An involuntary payment of 52p a year for something I don't agree with is 52p too much IMHO. The fact that they bring in tourism is a myth. Should we become a republic, all our history will be there, people will still want to see the Tower of London etc. Keeping on a royal family to capitolize on tourism is like keeping Kurt Cobain in an open coffin for fear no one will buy Nirvana records anymore.

Back to Godiva. It is a great, free festival but, to me, it's glory years are far behind it. It was much better when it was a smaller affair. When it attracted up and coming bands, about to break. There wasn't the "Bad Element" there is now and has been since just before the alcohol ban. It was a laid back weekend where you could enjoy being with your friends, listening to some local and national music, without fear of power hungry security or topless simpletons with staffy dogs.

But that's the point. The Government is there through democracy and as a believer in democracy, however socialist my view, I have to take it on the chin for the time. What I resent is a family claiming any superiority over any of us, feeling it justified for the country to keep them in luxery for little return.
