With all the quality staff Doug King has brought in, I think it’s time the goalkeeping department had a serious upgrade. Here are some names who could raise standards:
Adrian Tucker – Former pro, coached at Swansea and Sunderland, now with England youth teams. Brings Premier League and international experience.
Shay Given – Ireland legend with 400+ PL games. Served as GK coach and later first-team coach at Derby under Lampard. Holds a UEFA A Licence. Currently unattached – would instantly command respect.
Kieren Westwood – One of the best keepers ever to play for City. Over 500 pro games, 21 caps for Ireland. Recently became Head of Goalkeeping at The New Saints (Wales) and runs his own GK academy.
Sam Meek – Current England U21 GK coach, with previous roles at Villa, Birmingham, and Bolton. Highly rated in the FA set-up – a modern coach with a strong development background.
Alan Kelly – 30+ caps for Ireland, ex-Preston/Sheff Utd keeper. Spent five years as Everton GK coach, worked closely with Pickford, and was praised by Lampard. Left the club in August 2024.
For me, it’s obvious the GK coaching standards haven’t kept pace with the upgrades elsewhere. If we want our keepers to cut out the basic errors and maximise their ability, we need someone of this calibre.
What do people think – who would you want from this list?
