Apparently Blackburn are interested in him.

Surely he would prefer Championship over League One and the difference in wages too.

Maybe, but I doubt if he’d get many games at Blackburn, and if he lives in Birmingham, we are right on his doorstep now!

Very unlikely as I think he’s off to Forest or Blackburn. The only stumbling block is that Whelan wants a two year contract if reports are to be believed - club’s apparently are only willing to offer him one year.

Is it wrong that I’m not really bothered about signing him?

Not at all. Whilst I don’t doubt he still possesses some quality as a player, we’ve been bitten by these types of signings far too often.

I'd prefer signing Meyler out of the two as he's about 5 yrs younger

Myler was well off the pace. But every case on its merit and this lad has played consistently well at the highest level.

Yep.

I would like him here if he still has the legs for it.

We could certainly do with a bit more experience in the team, if only to stop MR from giving it the “we are still a very young side” every time we get turned over.

Him and Kelly would be brilliant! Really hope we get this one done
Kelly/Whelan/Westbrooke to fight it out for the 2 CM roles

We haven’t had much success with older signings. I would stick with our current method of having a young team
Last decent older signings were probably Strachan and McAllister

Villa fans at work saying he's decent and would be a good signing.
Don't think this would be one of those over the hill signings though I don't think it will happen, I think he'll stay in the Championship.

He would be superb but we can't afford him and John certainly is NOT a reliable source. Spouts almost as much rubbish as Cov bible. Still waiting on his 100% Hummell kit reveal.

Did you see him play? He can't run - the lads finished I'm afraid. Whelan was highly rated by fans in a team that won promotion from the Championship and you think a crock who couldn't really cut it in L1 is a better option. Righty ho.

Not that it will happen, but seriously I do wonder at times.

Could argue Doyle was a success? Led us to promotion from League 2...

While I agree with the Meyler point, a lot of my Villa supporting mates certainly didn't highly rate Whelan.

Just asked my Villa supporting colleague and he said he would have been happy to have kept hold of him.

Sadly I have a lot of Villa supporting friends and family and everyone of them rated him and thought he's still be useful in the Premier League too - that's good enough for me, but as I say not a chance imo.

This....

He likes to think he is ITK but that kit thing blew him out the water. Then he claims it will be 99% the same as the mocked up kit. It'll be sky blue and made by Hummell and he'll claim he was right all along.

Whelan was mentioned weeks ago. See he put "early stages" or something similar..... a nice fall back incase nothing materialises.

My Villa supporting work colleague, glutton for punishment, goes home and away following them told me Whelan could have been player of the season. We’ve still got a young squad here, we need some experience and know how, Whelan would be perfect imo.

Played 35 times in the championship for a team that got promoted, can't be anything other than a great signing if it happened

Would still do a job in the Championship according to a Villa fan I know at work. Could have been player of the season for them second half of the year.
