I enjoy London on the odd day out doing the usual tourist thing. Couldn't live there though. Far too hectic for me.

As a Cov Kid like myself you can recall the mad weekends in the pubs and clubs in the city centre back in the 70's/80's. Coventry had a bad reputation and so it is the same now in London and the big cities. But as bad as the violence was I don't remember as many stabbings as their are now.My step-daughter lives in London - East Finchley - and I bloody hate going for a visit. Everywhere is rush, rush, rush, whether it's traffic or people. Nobody looks at you or smiles and nods to say "Good morning". It's a soul-less place.
The Queen lives there so it can't be that bad. Mind you she does have sentries posted out front.I'm of the opinion that London is a complete cesspit to be honest. It doesn't feel safe and it's not a very pleasant experience being there.
I could go on a rant about it for hours but I can simply say that having been to Stockholm, Barcelona, Rome etc, that all of those cities are considerably better than London in more ways than one.

Don't think I would like to live there though. If I wanted to be close I think I would plump for somewhere like Watford Junction area and just a 15 mins or so train journey in.

Know very little of Watford, but have spent time around Watford Junction (while my daughter was at Warner Brothers Studios). Seemed quite decent.

When were you around there? Lived all over that part of London for years. You'd probably like Bristol, similar vibe to Brighton.London is no more dangerous than any other city in this country. I've lived in Deptford and Lewisham (before they became 'trendy') and never once felt unsafe or been threatened.
Either London or Brighton is the best city in England, IMO. Could never get bored in London.

Lived in London for nearly a decade, amazing city where you can do basically anything that you want to any time of day or night. Never felt unsafe, even when I lived in Peckham, Deptford etc. all the crime is basically gang related so as long as you're not involved with them it's in their best interest to leave you alone as to not draw attention to themselves. I think out of my huge extended friend group only 1 got in a fight in all that time.
The reason I left was the cost of living getting ever higher and wages not catching up. I was lucky enough to do my undergrad and masters there so being a student was able to live in cheaper accommodation and had loans every few months to top up my basics noodle supply.
My friends that are there now see less and less of each other as they're forced further out into the suburbs away from one another and are paying insane prices for terrible housing. The cost of a travel card is then hitting you too.
I would never put London down though, an incredible place, a properly global city and I love to visit time to time.

I went down to see a friend last summer and we went out for pie and mash and then to watch some boxing which strikes me as a pretty old school working class London day.Fair enough. I can see why a lot of people do like it. It's just too much for me though, and I think there are so many rough areas.
The key words from your post there for me are global city. Many people like that, but for me, it just signals that it's not very English anymore...
We must have been fairly close by at some point then.This was about 8 or 9 years ago...and for for a couple of years from 03 to 05. I've heard good things about Bristol and been meaning to visit. I think there's a direct train over from Brighton now so get over in the Spring.
