A hero of our times.
Really disappointed there is no thread unless I missed it.
One of the most significant court cases of our times.
Misogyny is not taken seriously.

Such an unbelievable story.

Yeah, I am a little surprised there is no thread, but my missus and I haven't discussed it at all and I think that's because we were too stunned to do so.

It's so outrageous.

Is that the husband who drugged her?

It's fucking disgusting. Are all of the others being convicted too?

Those that they can find, yes but I think they’re claiming that the husband told them she’d consented, which hopefully won’t be taken into account.

Saw this yesterday. A dozen or so have admitted rape on interpretation of the law. Of the 40 plus others, some claim naivety!

Who are the men convicted over rape and assault of Gisèle Pelicot?

Dominique Pelicot has been jailed for 20 years for drugging his then wife and inviting men to rape her – and 50 men were found guilty alongside him

It isn’t a defence even if true, consent can’t be given on someone else’s behalf. Frightening to think had he not been arrested for something else none of this would have emerged.

Isn’t that how they got that Manchester date rapist as well? Found the evidence on his phone for something else and some of the victims had no idea until the police contacted.

Absolutely insane.

My sister went on holiday somewhere in forget where, alone and got spiked at the hotel bar, luckily got herself back to her room before it kicked in and had to fight for a new hotel as she suspected it was staff.

Just nightmare material.

I think he got caught because someone woke up half way through, battered him and got arrested...until they looked at the rapist's phone.

Yeah I think that's what I remember from the documentary.

It's so scary that people actually had no idea.

Ah maybe that was it. I know there were victims who didn’t know till police contacted them.

Some had been doing the same to their wives and partners too. Vile!

It's so horrifying, aggravated by the fact that there are so many men involved in such a small area (relatively), that it's clearly much more widespread in society than people would like to believe. Domestic abuse and rape is just not talked about enough. When it comes up you hear indignation from some men, but the stats clearly show it's widespread and everyone probably knows an abuser - whether they are aware or not.

A thought experiment.
If the victim had realised what was happening and confronted her husband then fled to the police, would anyone believe her?
My view is No. The police would be reluctant to investigate. If he has time to destroy a lot of evidence she would be nowhere. I think the husband was trying to get her a dementia diagnosis, so, it seems likely she would have ended up in an institution on strong medication to pacify her.
It is also clear none of this would have been found out if the husband hadn't been reported for up skirting women. Doubt UK police would have followed this lead. Relatively minor sexual offences denote a pattern of predation, as we saw with Sarah Everard's murderer.

I thought exactly the same thing.

Also, this one makes the news, but how many other stories do we not know about...

Verdicts this morning.
All 50 men found guilty. Her husband, Dominique, given 20 year prison sentence.

20 isn't enough I don't think. I know he will probably die in prison but it should have been set as life to set a precedent.

A bit of controversy over light sentences kicking off now.

Reminds us that if a security guard had not pushed for charges for the upskirting offence none of this would ever have come to light. It's time to make "minor" sex offences more red flags, including of juveniles. Everyone who investigates crimes knows that most serious offenders start small then escalate.

And to encourage people to get help when they recognise this without penalty potentially or limited or temporary penalty to encourage self declaration

20 years is nothing considering the crime. It should have been at least double.

The sentences handed out to some of those men are an absolute disgrace. 3/4/5 years shamefully low. And the husband should have had a full life tariff - 20 years is the maximum the judge could award and it's just not enough (regardless of the man's age)

Like animal abuse extreme misogyny especially early on is a huge indicator of being a wrongun. Sadly probably harder to identify with every teenager doing Andrew Tate bits for the lols.

What the fuck are U two on about.

I wasn't implying it encourages rape at all.
I'm just saying girls like the ones I mentioned are glamorising sexual exploitation and making it out to be acceptable when it is the total opposite. Maybe I've put what I meant in the wrong thread as I haven't actually read the whole of it. So apologies if I have.

What does "that sort of sexualised behaviours" have to do with this case?

The thread has been about the same case since the very first post btw so no need for confusion.

Why aren’t the men who participate and buy the product glamorising it?

I mean also: consent is a thing. It’s the difference between a boxing match and GBH.
