M&S to cut Christmas products in Northern Ireland

M&S saying sandwiches needing three veterinary certificates to get through ?! And entire loads being turned away due to ink colour ? I mean, come on, whichever side of the argument your on that’s just ridiculous. We’re not talking about joe bloggs shitty sandwich maker.

Also I read earlier in the year 20% of all eu border checks were taking place in NI. Again this just feels disproportionate?

I’m not trying to justify the protocol, which alone brings plenty of challenges but the implementation of the rules appears to be causing totally unnecessary additional issues. A few weeks back both sides were making positive noises about tweaking things to make it a lot smoother. Not sure what happened but you’d hope a solution can be found

There is an answer, but it's not going to happen now, stay in the customs union.

And there are things in place should the protocol start causing serious economical issues ...hence article 16

This was also part of the deal agreed

If only there was some kind of trade agreement that does away with stupid things like this and allows free trade. We could give it a catchy name like the single market, no wait, the common market. If only such a thing existed.

Hasn't sailed at all .

Northern Ireland is a part of the UK , and if there are problems with the agreed protocol we can trigger article 16 .

That's what will probably happen

Realistically not sure that could ever have happen without freedom of movement etc. Just wasn’t deliverable. Always felt there could be some kind of food standards alignment/agreement which could deal with a fair few of the border issues though.

We all know what article 16 is .. The European Union triggered it a few months ago in relation to vaccines .

They then backed out

It’s almost like when you spend years making up bullshit about someone and blaming them for everything then leave a union with them they’re not inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt. Huh

Come on Steve. This is the freedom you wanted as a third party country.

You can’t be all “let’s leave the EU because they have ridiculous bureaucratic laws” then complain about being subject to those bureaucratic laws.

As long as it’s still in the UK I care about those living there getting some kind of benefit for a century of being dismissed as a basket case by both Eire and the British government. As it is Johnson has done more to unify Ireland than Gerry Adams ever could

Yeah, I agree, we can’t be shocked by it. It’s a joke though. People saying ‘oh just stay in CU’ are ignoring the realities of the vote as well though....but we’ve been going over all this for five years ! I’ve said my piece, some kind of food standards arrangement could/should resolve a fair few of the major border issues by all accounts. I’m no expert though

Edit - just dug up this article from earlier in the year

Not sure pissing off your biggest trading partner is a sensible move though. Especially as the fabled 40 trade deals don't seem to have materialised and that's before you even start talking about the GFA

I know, I’m talking about political reality. If many voted to leave because of uninhibited freedom of movement to then stay in CU just wouldn’t work. Both major parties accepted this in 2017 election

Not really. Itscurrently in the news so itsbeing discussed.
Itsin there's because the man who negotiated the deal thinks the deals shit.
People who voted for it (who come from all walks of life) would rather it isn't discussed.

Those who are against it (who come from all walks of life), are going to.

You seem to be throwing out a lot of silly generalisationsforsome bizarre reason.

That's a fair enough comment, and you're probably right so there is no workable solution and we're hoping the EU cave in.
What sort of government uses a strategy like that? It's mind boggling.

See if you can find any of my posts saying that.
I've actually argued the opposite for a long time, when people have come out with this 'we know what we voted for bollocks I've often said there was never consensus about what Brexit meant.

The well educated aren’t some random group. They’re literally the ones best equipped to assess complex information.

I get it Remain are arseholes. But so are Leave

I made a perfectly valid point that article 16 was a part of the deal negotiated .

I was then told I basically didn't know what it means.. so ofcourse you think I'm a div , il speak to you like a div

I'm not well educated. And Im not sure what it has to do with anything anyway.
I'm not sure what your angle is here, do you not expect people to discuss something as important as what's currently going on in NI?

Or doy ou just expect people to pretend it's going well when it clearly isn't?
