Coventry City Academy forward George Thomas agrees terms to sign his first professional contract

Coventry City forward George Thomas has agreed terms to sign his first professional contract with the club from July 1st.

The 18-year old has signed a two-year deal with the Sky Blues who he first joined when he was just six years of age.

Thomas had an impressive 2014/15 campaign, where he played for the Wales Under-19s and made seven first-team appearances. He is also the third youngest player in Sky Blues history after he started away to Leyton Orient back in January 2014.

Academy manager Richard Stevens said: “George has been here a really long time and we’re delighted with the progress he has made.

“He’s had a tough season physically but he has been rewarded for his excellent hard work and endeavour which he has portrayed throughout his time with the club. He’s a great talent and hopefully he can build on the platform he has set himself in the season just gone.”

Sky Blues Under-18s coach Jason Farndon added: “We’re really excited about George at the club.

“He can play in a variety of positions but I see him as a ‘number 10’. George has worked extremely hard this year and his schedule has been busy to say the least, but we’re delighted he has signed and look forward to helping him continue his progress.”

I'd send him out on loan next year. Needs constant game time to develop further.

Just like Finch, Haynes, Charles-Cook and Lawton - if we've got the capacity, get them out to any League Two side who will take them, all need as much game time in a rough as arse league to help them develop.

These kids are doing well in what is becoming a "hot" productive line, so why did they get rid of Gregor Rioch ? No wonder Tony Mowbray insisted on taking over all football affairs.

He's still only 18. If we loan him out before he's ready he'll just get lumps kicked out of him in league two which could stop his progression and knock his confidence. Agreed at some point he will need game time, but maybe leave him where he is for now and see how he kicks on under TM.

Totally agree, the lower you go, the tougher the players you are up against

That's been the same for years? Players have been loaned to the lower leagues for years, it toughens them up. I'd suggest there isn't that much difference in physicality to this league though.

Rioch went to Wigan. I expect they could offer him more money and at the time it was a step up.

I remember being mentioned once or twice that Pressley fell out with Rioch, maybe bullshit but Rioch tweeted something about the anchor being lifted with regards to Coventry after Pressley was sacked.

Anytime a player left, especially the kids he used to look after, he would send them a tweet that while not explicitly having a go a Presley didn't need much reading between the lines to work out there had been a major falling out.

Maybe that's the case. It's a shame either way.

Like Baker then, hardly professional? But the question remains did Pressley drop the axe or was it higher up
this is the sort of thing TM is trying to address; a professional environment that pulls in one direction, that instills high standards while acknowledging the history and achievements of the club and the players that have represented it.

Without undermining Riochs talents, now he has left, I am more interested in the scouts who gave him the talent to work with.
