He got retired in reality. The Froch fights were the beginning of the end for him, if he'd won those he could've gone onto big things. Unfortunately he just hadn't got enough quality when it came to the fights that really mattered.
Like you say it's a shame though he and De Gale should've been one of the great boxing rivalries, but neither really lived up to the hype.
