Decision engines are a different beast. You won’t get to strong AI on a rules based system.

But as I say, we have so much more we could do with the technology we have right now given more data and more effort. We’re only just scratching the surface of what weak AI like neural nets can do. Definitely exciting times, just not quite ready to worry about killer robots is all

I wouldn't be surprised if a country somewhere was well on the way in the field. They spend billions a year on research. Even in America where it is hard to hide a lot. They have whole districts where people don't know what is going on. It is only recently that they have admitted area 51 exists. So what chance do we have of knowing what is happening in countries like China or Russia?

Yeah it doesn’t work like that. Countries don’t advance decades ahead of the state of the art, that’s just conspiracy theory nonsense. Otherwise we’d all be flying around on the UFOs that first the Nazis and then the Yanks were supposed to be hiding.

Human progress stands on the shoulders of giants and gains are usually made in multiple unconnected places around the same time because the next step is usually pretty obvious.

Maybe in an area like cloning where there’s lots of restrictions on experiments, but even then not enough to be half a century ahead.

But 100 billion plus to knock 30 minutes off a train journey is money well spent

So you’ll be complaining about Johnson’s spending plans too then I guess - you seemed to find it funny about the Government not putting a candidate forward to the EU the other day. If there’s a fine, guess who’s going to be paying it?

Have you seen what Boris is promising?
When asked where the money was coming from for the 40 hospitals the tories said they were going to build Matt Hancock answer was the money will come in the future. Do you consider that to be sound ecocomics?

So the tories are pursuing a frivolous, expensive waste of tax payers money, that's what you're saying?

Half a century ahead of what?

We went from planes that had propellers to travelling to space in just over 20 years. And then you can use your conspiracy theories on if man walked on the moon or not.

Free?

No such thing. Close to 40 billion looks like the cost. And because it is planned to happen by 2030 the odds are it will be out of date by then.

The good thing is the chances are we will change government by then so they could blame each other for wasting 40 billion.

Brexit will have cost an estimated £2B by the time it happens and then we’ve got to deal with the cost of living it for which the government has set aside an initial £3B with this amount set to multiply multiple times as the reality of Brexit hits home.

I was reading that the average cost of broadband per month in the U.K. per household is £30, or £360 a year if you prefer. That sounds more like a tax cut than a tax rise to me.

This might be mind blowing to a lot of people but for me personally I’d be happy to pay more tax if it meant better services and a better NHS.

You mean you'd rather prevent another 130000 deaths from austerity than give tax breaks to corporation's, billionaires and millionaires? What's wrong with you?

Almost got into a fight with someone the other day when they said people on benefits don’t deserve access to the NHS.

I grew up in a single parent non working household and had meningitis when I was 3 and without the NHS I would be dead. Now I’m comfortable I am more than happy ‘paying it back.’

The cost of broadband in the UK is extortionate, we pay €15 a month for the same service that was £35 in the UK.

The main worry I have about properly taxing multinational companies is the risk of them just upping and leaving. I work for one of them and I quite like my job. But politically it’s something I agree with.

Anyway, I’ve been avoiding these sorts of threads for years as in all honesty I don’t feel fully qualified to discuss it all in detail. Not ashamed to admit my limitations.

So IN A BIT

I know someone who lives in Spain and pays similar, it’s also ultra fast fibre optic broadband as almost 90% of homes in basket case Spain has fibre optic compared to about 8% in the U.K.. Mind you I say basket case but we’re catching them up in the how many general elections can you have in four years race, we’re unable to form a majority government, parts of the U.K. want to leave as they feel they can do it better on their own and free from a centric government. Still, they have good broadband so who are we to think we’re better than them.

At the end of the day what really matters in life is happiness and actually there’s a really simple mechanism at hand to measure that against politics. The UN world happiness report. Just look at the top ten and then look at the politics of those countries. Surprisingly (or not, if you pay attention to what is actually happening in the world and not what’s reported in a heavily weighted right wing press) it’s socialist countries that dominate it. Or if you’re Boris Johnson, communists. Boris and his pals want us to emulate the US. You have to look a long way down the list to find the US and they’ve been regularly slipping for years. In fact if they fall much further I hear North Korea are planning a benefit concert for them.

So my advice to the forum is this. If you’re thinking about voting for the politics of the US and Trump, stop, take some deep breaths and consider the politics of countries such as Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, New Zealand and other well known communist countries that sit in the top ten.
