The place I bought has a Pay as you go meter for both gas and electric.

It's a fucking nightmare and nobody seems too forthcoming in wanting to come and change it for me.

I had the same problem mate, when i brought my house but the previous owners owed debt to electric/Gas companys so i had to first prove i was a new owner and then put up with meters for 6 months as i had not owned a property before. Once i done the 6 months i was able to get normal meters in.
I offered to pay a year up front (worked night shifts so was asleep daytime to get credits) and they still would not do it. Said it's the address and person (if the person is a new owner whit no history). 6 months on i got them both changed to regular meters and saved a small fortune.
Maybe the place you brought had gas/electricitry debt previous to you buying it, if as i had then you will be able to change after 6 months. Just make sure you register with them as a new owner ASAP.
By the way, when i brought my place i thought that would change the bills to my name, it did (but not the old debt (i was lucky, it was only about 100gbp. The debt was actually from almost 2 years before. Not saying you have the same problem but worth checking out mate.

It's quite a heavy handed practice and discriminatory towards younger folk really.

Yeah, they said I need to be here longer. It's weird as my credit rating is decent but they are going on the meter history.

Yet the mortgage lender are satisfied enough to enable you to purchase in the first place?
Balmy and not right.

It wouldn't have been balmy if they'd cut the gas off.

Oh yeah mortgage is fine. It's just the energy company being dicks.

I wouldn't mind but it's a pain in the arse going to check how much I've got and then rushing to the shop.
