We have competition for Rudoni in Esse...

Not how I see it. Esse is competition for Sakamoto which is why he started there vs. Stoke. He can cover Rudoni but I'd rather we play new signings in their strongest position and where we've got the least depth. If someone can show me that Onyeka offers something going fwd, it makes sense. Otherwise, not sold on the idea.

Onyeka could play in torps role and torp where rudoni is?

This reel shows a fair bit of attacking 3rd play from him, pre-Brentford.

Totally agree - this returns to the early-season style.

I was watching the Newcastle match the other night and said to my lad, I'd love us to sign someone in the mold of Joelinton. Big midfield presence and stature, aggresive, great stamina for box to box action. Gets involved in everything.

Onyeka isn't far away from that type of midfielder.

Joelinton isn't very good .I just don't see what he brings to Newcastle he may be ok for a game or two but most of the team he's average.and that's being generous.

Yeah, but Torp's had a great season so far playing deeper and Rudoni's been off it since he came back so I'd rather we deal with the issue directly - the drop-off in output and the speed of our play - by bringing in a more specialised CAM.

Not really debating opinions on how good his is (in the Preimer League). It's the type of player he is, that I think would complement our squad.

His match rating has been consistently good all season, with or without Rudoni.

He was out for Ipswich away game with illness and unsurprisingly, PNE was one of his worst games of the season and then he was average v Ipswich (H), which was the case for everyone.

while Asante was playing as a CAM or second striker. Unless someone can show me otherwise, Torp was starting deeper in those games. I'd rather just fix what isn't working and avoid messing with what was i.e. Torp playing closer to Grimes.

Had a look at his stats for last season at FC Augsburg and I don't see anything that says he'd solve our issue i.e. competition for Torp and Rudoni.

If anyone knows where to get fancy graphs and wants to show us different, go for it. In the one I found, he looks like an average DM that makes tackles.

We need legs in midfield not competition for Rudoni or Torp

Has Torp really played well there? Don’t think he’s actually played much in that role. Been Eccles/BTA. I think Torp is better deeper.

Exactly.

Our problem is stretching Grimes, particularly when teams attack us fast when we have sent too many players forward.

Onyeka doesnt need to be a fantastic playmaker, he needs to be a disruptor and legs to support Grimes

I think we'll be dialling up the aggression in the press too

There are times we need ball winners in that midfield. If you push up so high and don’t win the ball back, you’re exposed.

Case point being Birmingham’s 1st goal albeit, it was some brilliant attacking play from them. You can’t beat quick 2-3 first time passes like that - topped with a good finish too.

You're not worried about the lack of goals and good chances created through the middle of the pitch? because that's the issue from my POV, and I'm not seeing a player like Onyeka solves that issue. I think we need some guile and risk taking happening closer to the front three. Rudoni isn't offering that atm. Allen and Eccles give you 'legs' don't they?

The issue with goals comes from knackered out wingers and we have addressed that.

We have Esse too who can play in the middle. Ideally we would sign a striker but we wont.

What we have missed is a destroyer to grab the game back when the opposition has control, which they didnt have at the start of the season but have in recent weeks.

They are a better side with him in it mind you

He only ended up as a CM by fluke, he was once a hopeless No.9 who couldn't hit a barn door

Was it by fluke? I thought it was tactical by Howe.

He ended up there after Newcastle went a man down in one of Howe's first games and it just stuck

Not really no, think that issue will be addressed with the dynamism offered by Esse.

that's fair and I suppose a good player in that role would free whoever plays further fwd - Torp, Rudoni, Esse - to do what we need them to do. If that's what Onyeka is and he's good at it, him or someone like him could make a difference. I hear you.

Agree completely.Signing Onyeka addresses one of our outstanding main issues . Makes us less exposed defensively but still with plenty of attacking options playing in front of himself and Grimes. Also leaves a good choice of bench options .
