Gonna get all my complaints out before he’s appointed lol. Been listening to some interviews and he talks about players far more than tactics. In fact I don’t think I’ve heard him talk tactics once in about three hours of interviews I’ve listened to. Got the job at Derby because Harry Redknapp knew the Chairman, complained at Chelsea about players questioning him and not putting effort in (!), talks a lot about the Chelsea kids he loaned at Derby and not much else. Seems to be in it for the ego not any great knowledge of the game, enjoys being a coach and developing players more than the rest of the job.

Sounds a lot like he’ll need someone with some tactical nous in alongside him at least.

He’ll have my backing if it’s him, but I have to confess that it cheapens the whole thing if we’re his second choice and he was looking for other jobs too. That might be assumption and presumption, I hold my hands up, but it’s just another way that we no longer have stability and we’re more of a ‘normal’ club, as opposed to being a club where the manager had almost started to feel like “one of us”.

Are we the only club daft enough to actually give him a job so he's forced to accept it

Yeah I can see her going to Binley Mega Chippy getting dinner for her husband.

On Lampard, I've gone from 'no thanks' to 'hmmm'. Still gutted that we sacked Robins mind you, but what's done is done and we can only hope King gets this decision right.

Which isn’t a bad thing if you finish par. As things stand, we’re well under-par.

He’s the only manager on the bookmakers odds that have actually finished in the playoffs before.

Lampard doesn’t inspire me, I’ve said this on other threads. He’s still got to a playoff final and finished in the top 4 in the Prem which is better than all the ‘realistic’ candidates.

It would be funny if Lampard walked in dressed as Doug King, mask, wig and everything.

I joke, I am pretty sure our fans had masks of him made to wear...

The reality for me is , of the serious candidates and not Moyes / Southgate and alike , if I have to go with one now it probably is Lampard purely because of the term head coach and what our players could take from him . Wycombe manager I don’t know anything about but based on results would be my second choice

There’s not much difference between Boateng and Keane in terms of experience really. I don’t know how anyone in our shoes could make a solid assessment about either of their abilities as a coach.

Limited data but data exist, Boatengs highest appointment was Ghana and was a failure, Keanes is the IDF Fun League but was a roaring success.

Generally I’d rather have someone never tested than theatre but failed unless we can get someone tested who succeeded, that’s the dreams obvs.

I absolutely do not want Lampard. However, given the other options such as Keane, Schumacher, etc then I absolutely do want him!

His record. Getting sacked by Villa U23s and would only have got the job as he’s an ex player, then underperformed with Ghana, then to us with a noob owner hiring people based on interviews it seems.

Which would be remarkable considering the club statement said "will take its time to appoint a successor to Mark"

Yes he was as good that season, but the ways being talked about is he guided a mid table mediocre side to the dizzy heights of 4th place. That's a bloody good squad, and they brought Kovavic in for £40m before the embargo was placed on them.

It is a good squad but the consensus is both inside and outside of this club that we've got a good squad, so somebody who achieves a level in the league expected of the squad they've got sounds like a good fit to me.

I just think the club and country you were at aren’t a great recommendation. One thing if you’re Viveash or someone who has been there years, but generally if you keep leaving jobs after 12-18 months with no real success to speak of I’ve got questions.

My pick would be David Moyes or Graham Potter tbf but not heard these name being mentioned too often.

As time goes on it’s looking more like it could be lampard

Sort of. It's more akin to us winning a booby prize and we get to choose from the least worst of what's left.

Slightly off-topic… was Simms playing at Everton when Lampard was there?

We can disagree whether it was right or wrong to get rid of Robins.

We can disagree about whether Lampard has overachieved/ underachieved/ did alright in his previous jobs.

We can disagree regarding whether Rome or Coventry is more beautiful.

We can argue that bookies know everything or, given the paucity of money probably staked on a small market, naff all.

But surely we can all agree that the Coventry Evening Telegraph website absolutely honks.

Not keen on fan favourite former players coming back as novice/inexperienced managers as a rule, perfect if it works well, but can be really awkward if things start to turn to shit.

Loved Keane as a player but would he be in the running if he hadn’t played for us? Or in the running for any other championship vacancy?

Do they though?

I suspect on these markets they rake it in by just putting up a list of former players, champo managers recently out of a job and one of Rooney/Lampard/Gerrard, then just slash the odds on anyone that actually gets backed in case they are in the running.

It's way more complex than that

If King wants a top coach he will have to offer top money and that coach will want players in January. If the stated ambition is to reach the Premier league you will need to make sure that the successful candidate would be ready for that as well. This will be a test of his willingness to invest, if you can afford Lampard why cant we afford Moyes or a name of that calibre. Building on good foundations to get a promotion could be appealing to some of the out of work Prem managers at the minute as the pressure will be different and possibly more enjoyable.

If Doug openly admits he doesn't know a lot about football, I wonder who is making the decision to bring (we assume) Lampard in.
