I think the highest we would get is 5 and I imagine that's only with add ons. I'd take 3 outright based on age, contract and potential to make us better. This is on the basis we don't get promoted

Grimes was older and we signed him for £4m, you’ve definitely undervalued Sheaf here.

Sheaf won’t leave this summer imo, the window of opportunity for him and us to maximise his value has been and gone.

A Premiership almost definitely won’t move for Sheaf this offseason so what’s the point in selling to another Championship club?

We’ve got a years extension in our favour on Sheaf haven’t we? That will be taken up and he’ll have 2 years left,

Coventry is a sithole, but Bedrock is the absolute flea infested arsehole of the universe.
The only thing positive to come out of Bedworth is the road back to Coventry.
(And that's saying something)

Both are better than Birmingham and Leicester though.

Grimes has barely missed a game his entire career, he constantly manages 10+ games more a season than Sheaf ever has for us. He also seems to take a while to get going again after injuries. Can't imagine that won't be a factor in his value.

I can't remember if he got a big wage boost, He is a top Champ player when on form and fit so will be hard to replace. Just need to weigh up if the potential fee and saving of wages could be better used.

But Grimes is better than Sheaf age or not. He's 27 now. Sheaf strikes me as the almost man he still needs to cut out the crap passes that put us on the back foot but he hasn't yet and injuries have crept in. I'd be surprised to see him play in the premiership unless it's with us.

Did he put his hand in his pocket and buy a round?

Comparing them is apples and pears. Sheaf was a top performer in his categories last season as was Grimes and going into next season, both players will complement the other very well imo.

The reason I used Grimes as a benchmark was because he’s slightly older and cost £4m so Sheaf is worth more than that imo. Clubs were certainly willing to pay more than that in the summer.

Since Hamer left, Sheaf had to step up as a creative playmaker and that isn’t really game and on the injuries front, I expect his workload to managed better now the squad is expanding. Players like Torp and Eccles backing up Grimes and Sheaf is good depth for the Championship (excluded Allen because his contract situation is unclear).

I’m optimistic Sheaf can stay fitter next season because we’re in a better position to manage his workload a bit better. In his career with Cov, he’s pretty much had to play 100% of minutes whenever he’s available and the type of injuries he’s had tend to be muscular i.e. overuse.

The bottom line is that I don’t think there’s anyone on the market that we’d get who is better than Sheaf for £3-5m.

Maybe not but 5m might get you a couple of quality prospects.

I'm not against keeping him but now is the only time we'll have to cash in on him. I'm not really sure I'd want to give him a bumper new deal with his injury record

He’s effectively contracted till 2027 so there’s no rush to make a decision this off-season. Next season is a different story and if we’re still a Championship club and he is in good form, we’ll have to cash in.

Not necessarily. Of course he could spend most of the year out injured and end up losing more value but I think selling now could be selling at the bottom of the cycle.

He's had an injury ravaged season, he's not been as effective as previous seasons when he has played and has not shone as captain. If he does have that extra year on his contract then if he had a good season next year we could possibly get a higher fee for him than we would now. He'd still be in his 20's so not old.

Ah I thought it was 1 year left. Fair enough, not against trying to see if he can stay fit

He will go too Shefield United if they go up. We are their midfield feeder club.

The club have a one year extension they can trigger that’s in our favour. So we can be relaxed about his contract situation until Jan/June 2026.

It’s a no contest for the captaincy.

Irrespective of who’s played more minutes or not.

Sheaf is a massive wet lettuce on field. Great player but a shit captain.

Doesn’t stick up for his players if there’s a scuffle, doesn’t gee the players on if we’re losing, doesn’t encourage players that make mistake and barely utters a whisper when refs give terrible decisions (unless it’s on or by himself!).

It’s been very noticeable when he’s been out and Kitching has taken the band.
