You are the ones who actually pay for all the NHS workers, teachers, firemen, policemen etc. etc.

You don't really have a voice, so you don't really get to bitch & moan in the mainstream media like those mentioned above.....

...Besides, as you generally work longer hours for less pay & less benefits, you don't really have the time or inclination to moan.

Unlike many others, you are all too aware that jobs are fragile & scarce so you just get your head down & get on with it.

It is what annoys me about all these people who go on strike because they aren't getting a chunky pay rise every year. If I was the boss I would find reasons to sack each and every one of them.

If they don't like their job then keep their head down, keep working and look for other jobs.

All these train drivers who don't want to work weekends etc unless they get paid more and go on strike, did they not sign a contract?

I'd never dream of going to the press if I had an issue with my job and kicking up a stink, not only would it make my employers look bad I would probably be at the job centre the next morning looking for a job! If I want a pay rise I have 2 options:

Make my boss see how valuable I am and put up a decent case for one
Look for other jobs

Nick, when was the last time Policemen fireman or nurses went on strike? Self Employed paying for NHS! what a load of crap.......the self employed i know would kick off if they paid more than 2 grand ayear in tax.

I agree on train drivers though. Anyone that strikes in this current climate needs there arses kicked!

Fire Service went on strike on bonfire night 2010.
Royal college of Nurses threatened a strike ballot in 2011.
Police havn't been on strike but don't half fucknig moan alot & hold days of protest etc.

I'm self-employed & pay shit-loads of tax. I also raise shit-loads of VAT for the Govt. My little business also spends shit-loads with other businesses. The SME's of Britain are the life-blood of this country.

I'm all for the public sector getting a fair deal, I just get sick & tired of them fucking moaning when they've got no clue how good they've got it compared to the MAJORITY who work in the private sector & pay their wages, holidays & pensions.

To be honest, I have nothing against Fireman, Police, Nurses and Doctors and think they should be paid well for the jobs they do. It is the people in the offices who moan that they haven't had a raise in wages / pension for 12 months and go on strike and kick up a fuss and usually get what they want.

Not all Self-employed folk are "dodgy trades" as you suggest they are.

Most are like me....hard working tax payers who get no paid annual leave, sick pay or pension yet still contribute to all those benefits for others.

There are also lots & lots of people who are registered as self-employed at the request/demand on their actual employers.....

....Certain sections of the private sector are tough like that...

You missed the point of the teacher's post.

Anyway

Having worked in both private and public sector I think there is a difference in ethos. Teachers, local govt officers, nhs are all public servants and their success is measured on a daily basis. The same applies in the private sector except the only measure they really have is how much they sell or how much they can take off us.

I prefer being a public servant. Nothing better than doing a job where I can make a difference for people rather than either pushing pins on a daily basis and feathering the nests of someone higher up the ranks.

Either way in both circumstances I paid tax and national insurance. The self employed work hard for their money and perhaps their tax avoidance is just reward for their entrepreneurship and being able to provide for themselves.

Not sold on the notion that self employed and private sector contribute to society. Oh wait.....Thatcher said that there is no such thing as society.

The other thing that is important to me is to do what I enjoy. It happens to be in the public sector at the moment. Having worked in factories for the previous 28 years and working shifts for 16 years I think I prefer my current job.

Yeah it's the Mitt Romney 47% myth, but in fact the private sector is 100% reliant on the infrastructure provided by public spending in order to make its money and pay its taxes (who educated your staff and your clients, who provides the transport for them to get around, keeps them healthy, secure, etc etc), so it's more a circular process of giving with one hand taking with the other, not that there's anything wrong with that

Confusing. You seem to be both lambasting strong unionisation, yet also lamenting poor deals for workers. Which is it? Because politicians are exceptional at getting us to despite our own best interests and knife our neighbour, be they immigrants, public sector workers, smokers, welfare recipients...

Have you tried mopping up after an incontinent pensioner as a nurse? or using your requisite fitness skills and bravery to risk your life in extinguishing a fire? or put in the years of study and sacrifice it takes to become a doctor? or breaking up a fight in a kebab shop on a Friday night as a policeman?
