http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/dec/15/football-league-highlights-bbc-channel-5

The Football League is set to announce that the BBC has lost the rights to the weekly highlights show to Channel 5.

It is understood Channel 5 will show the highlights at 9pm on Saturday evenings with the prime-time TV slot hugely appealing to the Football League clubs who want to attract younger audiences.

The BBC has scheduled its highlights of matches from the Championship, League One and League Two beginning after Match of The Day – usually starting just before midnight and ending after 1am.

The Channel 5 deal will take effect from the start of next season and will also include Capital One Cup highlights. The Football League is expected to make an announcement before Christmas.

----------------

Good, we can see the glut of City goals before 1am then.

Good. The BBC's coverage has been dreadfully patronising, down to using pundits like Rosenior and Claridge as if to say that the FL is just about journeymen.

Good news. It can't be any worse than what BBC show.

The BBC coverage isn't great as mentioned above, but does anyone seriously think Channel 5 will do it better??

Unless Manish, Claridge and Rosenior are in line for a TUPE transfer then yes.

Good that should see the end of that scruffy Claridge and the other idiot that hosts it. It always on to late anyway.

Bang On. Channel 5 are crap at Sports Coverage. They used to cover the Champions League qualifiers i believe and they also had some Europa League games when it was called the Uefa Cup. Personally i'd rather see it back on ITV. I miss the old Championship programme

If they had got rid of the presenters and moved it to BBC2 and put it on at 8pm it would have got more viewers. Why do they need the presenters anyway just show the goals.

I think Sky still produce the best show and BT sport the worst Michael Owen is drab! But they all have far to many people in the studio etc if you have to have the presenter and one more that is enough now they seem to have 3

BBC couldnt move it to an earlier time due to an issue with the broadcasting rights, very similar to that of Match of the Day. They couldnt show it on IPlayer and the repeat in the morning couldnt be broadcast after a specific time. It looks like the FL are changing the rules for Channel 5 to attract more interest in the game, but the time of the programme isnt always down to the broadcaster

Three hours earlier is far better, but I speak as someone who wants to see the highlights and couldn't give a shit about the pundits or presenters.

I went to watch Pompey on Saturday (mate had a spare season ticket) and he was saying that Claridge is doing ok as manager of Salisbury FC, a club now with some money.

No wonder the show is on late...he needs time to get showered and transported to the studios!

Bang on - regardless of timings a bit less analysis and a bit more football is the way to go for all of these programs I'd say. I want to watch the footy, and I'm happy to interpret the game for myself.

If I want analysis of every decision, or a ten-minute feature on a footy club I've no real interest in by some painfully unfunny half-wit, I can get that on the early morning Saturday shows that I never bother to watch.

It can, at least the Beeb didn't have adverts in their coverage. Even if C5's show is 90 minutes long, a good 20 or 30 minutes of that will be adverts. Hence less time for actual coverage and goals.

I remember ITV's coverage of the Football League, it was terrible. Adverts galore and blink-and-you-missed-it coverage, to the point where sometimes their cameramen would 'miss' goals scored. In the end ITV dropped coverage of League 1 & 2 and just focused on the Championship. Lets hope C5 don't have the same idea.

The fact it will be earlier is good. Sometimes you can't be bothered when it's on at 1am!
That said, I would like to see less analysis on all these football shows. It's way too patronising and tbf leaves no time for the very point of the programme, which is highlights! Lets hope Channel 5 get the balance right.

We used to moan about ITV's shit coverage of us, and that was in the championship. How will we fare with another commerical network, looking to get ratings and sell advertising spots to their target group of "young adults"? Can't see struggling Cov in L1 being much of a draw for them.

Edit: also I can't bear watching stuff on C5, especially films. Seems there's an ad break every 10 minutes.

I guess the best thing for everyone to do would be to actually watch the games live, particularly home games then there would be no need to have to watch highlights?!

I live a million miles away, I have an excuse

This is good news, fuck them leicester lovers talking shit every week who present it at present, ITV will be challenging for MOTD too in 2016 when out for tender as they lose the Champions League broadcasting rights.

I wonder if the beeb ever asked as it would probably have got in the way of one of these dancing shows or some other crap that they waste the licence payers money on.

Might have something to do with SKY's conditions on retaining access up to a certain time .

Are C5 somehow connected with Sky that allows access.

There are no such restrictions surrounding the highlights of the football league . There is only one reason why its not on at 9 pm and that's ratings. Why on earth would they want to put football league highlights on primetime up against say the X Factor. Utter madness.

He hasn't even had a game as Salisbury manager mate. They went out of business and now they're starting from scratch reportedly with Claridge as boss. So I suppose you could say he's doing ok. He's undefeated at least

Do you mean the shows that pull in more viewers than Match of the Day or Football League Show? (and cost less to produce).

I'd rather watch Strictly than most of our highlights so far.

It just means adverts for Home and Away and dodgy US TV shows every 5 minutes I think I will still just record and watch.

I'll be so glad when this happens. I get suckered in to staying up and watching the high lights (snigger) every Saturday. Even when I was there for the game.
