Having watched the three league semi final and final playoff matches, the FA Cup Final and the Champions League Final it is safe to say that the "beautiful game" of today needs very little tweaking to make it even more attractive.

But to get to where we are today has involved a number of subtle and at times major changes over the last few years and I was just wondering which of these made the most significant difference to enhance our game.

The most important changes / improvements from what I can remember (no preferential or date order) are:

* 3 points for a win
* no passing back for keeper to pickup
* 6 second rule for goalkeeper possession
* the playoffs for the three non premier leagues
* no replays in cup games penalty kicks decide after ET
* yellow / red card system
* goal difference not goal ratio in level points situations
* sky television coverage

One that got away (tried but abandoned - why???)
* 10 yard advancement for free kicks that are over contested

I may have missed one or two - any more additions or which is your favourite from the above !!!

Extra officials.

The 10 yard one got scrapped because it was awful, even the refs didn't know how to work it - a good example of this was set at HR when the ref advanced a free kick to who we were playing against (can't remember) and that took it into the penalty area, which actually wasn't allowed. The opposition scored from that!

Most important from what you've put is probably the play-offs, especially in our case. The hype that surrounds that game now is unreal.

The 6 second handling time for keepers may aswell not exist. Its never enforced.

Never enforced and pretty pointless if you ask me. Sure keepers shouldn't be time wasting, but that should be common courtesy, like playing the ball out when someone is injured, or kicking the ball back to the keeper after drop ball.

Playoffs are a killer - finish 3rd and you should go up ~ finish 4th and play off against 4th bottom in the league above

I'd keep the playoffs but stack the odds in favour of teams based on league position: 5th plays 6th, winner plays 4th. Winner of that plays 3rd, who have an automatic bye into the final.

the playoffs are fine as they are. They are a lottery and it's more entertaining that way.
