How long have they been a thing from 5pm? Yeah at midnight but never noticed so many beforehand.

Same here. I think they are about 1/2 mile away. I guess it keeps people off the streets?

Agreed, next door neighbour has been letting them off intermittently since about 6pm. Luckily my dog I pretty chilled about them. The cat is losing his shit though.

It’s like Beirut outside, fucking hell. Have never known so many fireworks. It’s torrential and has been for the last few hours.

It looked as bright as day time out there at just before midnight. I've never seen as many fireworks going off in so many directions all at the same time.

Same here. House opposite had some Alton Towers level ones going off. Exploding a few feet above their roof, fancy a few tiles may be fucked.

Should be banned apart from professional, organised displays.

Lovely displays in Spon End but all of them to the north of me. Nothing to see from the south-facing window not even from the Butts Stadium which I think used to have a display every new year?

Bars had to be closed by 1am, at 1am i was changing bars. No one is adhering to the rules.

I'm pro vaccine, but for 1 night all the bars said sod you. We need to make some money or we close.
Police never went near them, about time they had some common sense.

From tomorrow we need to knuckle down again, but people needed a blowout.

So, I agree but can’t for the life of me think of a way of getting a nation to comply with draconian measures.

I see France have taken their New Year Eve activities to a whole new level.

French car-burning returns for New Year's Eve

Car burning has become an annual event in French suburbs since riots hit several cities in 2005.

My understanding is fireworks aren’t banned in the Netherlands at Nee Years but are the rest of the year.

Surprise after massively ignored fireworks ban: 'Smashing success'

While the general fireworks ban was very well observed last year, this was completely different this year: according to the police, 'a remarkable amount' of fireworks were set off. Many Dutch people were surprised or annoyed, the fireworks industry is now crowing victory.

'A lot of fireworks nuisance during the New Year' was the headline of the National Police on Saturday morning in its own news item about the New Year 2021-2022. "Despite the fireworks ban and the seizure of large quantities of illegal fireworks in the run-up to the New Year, a striking number of fireworks were set off."

The police force thus confirmed what ordinary Dutch people had seen on social media and in WhatsApp groups for a long time: the fireworks ban was widely ignored everywhere. People shared photos and video images en masse. "The children's fireworks are not disappointing," Roy Boverhof joked on Twitter with a photo of a sky lit by fireworks. 'Smashing success that fireworks ban', reports another.

Others react irritably and cynically. 'Fireworks ban? Didn't notice anything, except that I couldn't buy anything legally myself," tweets Ed Wielenga. According to Michel Kok, the massive donation means a 'big middle finger to the care and benevolent Netherlands'. Many animal owners are also annoyed.

There is irritation about the police who, according to many, did not act or hardly acted in many places. ,,Here in Bedum hundreds of young people on their feet, all in possession of fireworks. There is a lot of police, but they watch helplessly.”

Agents, and otherwise the riot police, did intervene in various places. "Police officers were injured in several places in the country," the National Police themselves reported. This happened, for example, in Burdaard, Friesland, where three police officers may have suffered hearing damage when they were pelted with heavy fireworks.
