I don't know if the micro transactions are overstated or not, but you can get a very good team on Ultimate Team (FUT) just by completing squad building challenges and/or "evolutions" without having to spend money.
playing FUT with a Coventry City team, which with evolutions is not too bad, I've managed to get, with minimal effort, Sakamoto, O'Hare (fucked right off when he left, though), Simms and Sheaf very highly rated, and a team that can hold its own.

Not perfect but definitely an upgrade on making each player at least look like an individual rather than a identikit clone
Yeah, AI faces looking not too bad. Kits are never updated on the beta as they release an earlier game build where these are not updated yet. If they do have a license for the CBS, it would be a game changer for meFC25 Beta is out, kits not updated but a lot of the faces are new this year, looks like the AI face builds rather than scans. This is why im gonna get the game this year! Really like this being able to make your club players competitive.Yeah that's how I've had a decent time on FC24. Grinding the Evos to get the best Coventry Squad I can. Very satisfying beating someone with a stacked team of legends using Cov player.
