Now the dust has settled on the season and thinking about next seasons aspirations I think winning the league is a realistic aim even if we signed nobody and let nobody go, which obviously won't happen but as I've no idea who will be going or coming in I am just basing this on the current squad.
Neither Robins or Lampard at any point all season had a fully fit or close to fully fit squad to choose from, all season the first team largely picked itsf due to injuries. From memory only MVE and Collins of the entire squad didn't have significant periods out with injury, perhaps Kitching as well. Grimes only had half a season with us.
I don't think any other club had as many injuries we did. Yet we finished 5th and this calendar year I think we're 3rd in the form table.
The 3 who are coming down do not look as strong as Burnley and Sheff Utd. Leicester I think will struggle due to the off field issues. Southampton don't look much. Ipswich should be challenging though.
Looking at the league for next season assuming Sheff Utd go up I don't see any side significantly better than us. Our coaching set up looks top draw and dare I say PL ready.
While we have made stupid errors all season defensively, the 4 CBs are very young and we're brought in to develop and Kitching and Thomas have significantly improved. It is unlikely we will be so naive defensively next season as the CBs will be more streetwise as they are maturing.
It's the most optimistic I've been about a new season since the year after we won the Cup. As a fanbase we have grown accustomed to looking at things glass half empty but I just genuinely feel the upward trajectory of the club incrementally is moving towards inevitable promotion in a similar way to Brentford.
Whether Wright Simms and MVE want to stay is for me questionable so if they go we need to get it right replacing them. If Sheaf goes personally I'm more than happy with Eccles playing with Grimes. I don't think we need a massive turnover this summer, so might be a bit of a boring summer in that regard for those who like transfer news and gossip.

Play offs minimum. Top 4 has to be the aim though, if we recruit well.

As always, challenging for play offs until the last few games of the season, anything else is a bonus.

Top 4 aim. Objective had to be the same, to get into the playoffs and win the lottery imo.

I just want one season - one! - where we actually come out of the traps looking like we know what the plan is for the first 10-15 games. I’m not saying we need to win every game, but let’s just play at a consistent level and get in the top 6 without having to go on some insane run around January again.

Do people realistically think we're that good that we should be in the top 2 next season? I can't see that personally I'm afraid

Not without some exceptional recruitment and some misfortune for the parachute teams. Not to mention the big spenders

We didn’t scrap into the playoffs like we did in 22/23. That was genuinely pinching playoffs on the final day.

Granted, securing playoffs was more uncomfortable than it needed to be and had we got results at Hull, Derby, Plymouth and Luton… 4th place was well and truly in play.

The big area of improvement is our form against the bottom 8 teams, our form against the top 16 teams was solid. This should be relatively easy to sort out.

we need the same type of season Sunderland have had, great start then just cruised along finishing 4th, top 2s not gonna happen so if we can make 3rd or 4th ours then should have a lot better chance, we’re getting closer

Progress would be cementing ourselves into the play offs some weeks before the end of the season. So aiming for 5th, 4th or 3rd.

But if you can get into that group early on who knows what can happen.

It's a tough league though, so you have to earn it and defend as a team better and cut out those silly disastrous mistakes.

Play offs. Need to not be afraid of a couple of quality loans

Probably not, but at least wait until the transfer window is over and done with before making a judgement.

Under Lampard, we have been close to our billing as ‘dark horses’ that was hyped last pre-season. This upcoming season is about adding a few quality players and we build on that Top 4 form we’ve had under Lampard.

I do struggle to see how loans would necessarily improve us. If we can get a permanent transfer, in most cases it’s preferable to a loan.

Signing Grimes in Jan was a game changer, you wouldn’t have had a signing as impactful as that by picking up a ‘superstar’ 18-21 year old from the Prem. Look at Ayari, failed at 2 Championship clubs, plenty of ‘experts’ on here said he’d struggle to play above L1 and this season he’s played a decent role in a top half Prem team.

We can't compete with the parachutes so that means the inevitable fight for 5th or 6th place. The trouble is everyone is playing the same game. This season will be seen as a success overall but it will take a bit of luck in the transfer market and a certain amount of rebuilding if we are to be competitive. We absolutely need a better start, no excuses!

This is a massive summer for our club .
We don’t want to be classed as “ unlucky Coventry “ by everyone .
Frank , IF given a good budget & the prospect of selling our 3 strikers for even a £10 mill recoup , would be something good + the £6 mill to come from Vik’s impending sale to Arsenal…….. we should be able to afford some quality signings & be alongside the 3 relegated teams ?
In Frank we trust

We’d been in the playoffs for 9 of the previous 10 match days. Teams were scrapping to finish above us and in reality, a draw would’ve seen us finish 6th on the final day. That isn’t scrapping playoffs.

In 22/23, we went up into 5th on match day 45 and secured it on the final day. That was sneaking in and scrapping the playoffs.

Keep finishing in or around the playoffs and we'll win one of them

There’s no point in even kicking a ball if you’re saying there’s zero chance of us winning the competition

Makes zero sense. So do you think the winner of Charlton Orient should just give up as they aren’t trying to win the league

I’d like to see us performing at a consistent level all season really.

Sunderland’s form since November has been around 6th place and tailed off massively. It’s a huge concern should they lose to Sheff U next weekend.

I think it should be playoffs in and around all season. We are never going to compete with the parachute payment PL teams so you have to rule out top 3 really. But we could be like Sunderland and be in and around it all season. If you’re expecting top 3 you are in for a downfall like some predicted at the start of this season. We are a top 10 side and should be in and around 10th to 4th. That’s my prediction

Whose alt account is this? It's very funny.

I expect us to reach the play-offs and top 4 would be nice.

Their fans will probably be realistic though - same here too - I just don't see us finishing in the top 2
