Sometimes retire, take the insurance then play in non-league.

He had (I think) his best season ever last year in terms of goals. Wish him the best. He was a massive part of our story.

Is this the thread to discuss what ex-players are doing now? If I'm in the right place, then former City player and England star Jay Bothroyd retired from Hokkaido Consadole Sappro in 2021

Would have thought that with the amount of money around that clubs don’t invest / strategise more in making sure drinking to excess doesn’t devalue club assets: ie, players. Bright would have been a serious asset had he kept straight and narrow.

It’s a waste of a talent. Kevin Thornton springs to mind. Whelan too to a degree.

Maybe the strength of the leadership in the dressing room makes a difference. Dublin, we are told, was a strong role model and maybe that and Strachan putting him up kept Whelan in check for a while. Bright, like many with substance issues, needs / needed a mentor.

What other players have we had that stacked it through drink or drugs?

Martin Cranie was another big drinker too, no? Seem to remember him stumbling around in Leamington on multiple occasions.

Yes, remember seeing him out with Gunnarsson regularly

Elliott Ward was another

Different era of players to the current crop who generally reflect the Gen Z trend of drinking less

Gunnersson strikes me as the kind of bloke who could drink you under the table. I was in Reykjavik the other week and there were proper old style drinking nightclubs still going at 4am. Which is bananas given the price of absolutely everything out there.

Gunnarsson got sent off first half in a game for us and I went into Crosbys (as I think it was then) in town after and he was sat in there drinking!

Got the DJ to put out on the mic that he was happy he has managed to stay in there longer than being on the pitch today!

He's not playing amazing and maybe it is a step too far. He can do a manageable job for arsenal for sure but would love him back!

Still early days, he may adapt. I think they expect him to be more of a traditional striker whereas we let him dribble from deeper positions etc. so might be tactical issue not talent. And that's no knock on arsenal, they shouldn't change tactic just for vik. It will work out for him either there or somewhere else I'm sure.

This is what I was saying to an Arsenal fan I work with. They have him playing like the clapped out version of Ronaldo that we still see paying for Portugal i.e. hanging around in the box for a cross (that never comes). He needs early service and balls into feet, like you say his best work was playing from deep/wide positions and generally being more involved. The fucker hardly gets a touch at arsenal!

They also are incredibly boring to watch and generally create fuck all from open play from what I've seen.

We could take him back at a stretch - might have to drop a few quid on his wages and a free transfer but I think he could be good under Frank

Love Vik but have always had doubts about him at PL level TBH. Not watched enough to have a proper opinion but wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t make it there.

I’m struggling to keep defending Vik, I know they don’t play to his strengths sometimes but even when he gets in the open space where he was so good for us he seems to trip over himself. Shows how big the step up is, thought he’d be doing a lot better.
