Goal difference may well be a major factor come the end of the season as I mentioned yesterday Luton have a bigger goal difference than we have scored this season

Scenario for you. Say the league positions are as they were on Saturday at 5 to 3. Imagine it's the last game of the season.

That blunder would have lost us an automatic promotion place and not even earned us a playoff place. From 3rd to 8th.

I accept all keepers make mistakes. That though yesterday was pure madness. Could prove to be the difference.

When we get to that end of the season I very much doubt you would drop from 3rd to 8th.
By that time many will have dropped off the pace.
What we need to do is beat Swindon as an absolute necessity to stay in the chasing group. If we don't we could be one of those dropping off the pace.
A good loan striker from higher up the leagues who would do well at our level is urgently required and a wide man who can chip in a few, aka Baker.

Who would of thought that the 3rd placed side would win the title on the last day... it's a funny league.

Another scenario.... who will the blame be pointed at if no mistakes are made for the rest of the season and we miss out in the play offs by a point or two.

Will it be O'Brien for the Newport and Yeovil errors.
Will it be Burge for the Exeter and Forest green error
Or Biamou for not scoring.

Exactly. Can't assume anything.

I am sure that on the last day of the season there were quite a large number of teams all still in the promotion mix.

Got a feeling it was something like 9 or 11.

Mansfield started the last day in 12th on 65pts and Blackpool in 7th on 67 points.

There was still plenty to play for between 7 sides to make 6 and 7th spot.

4th and 5th spot battled between each other for final standings.
With the top 3 going for the title.

We are just not good enough to capitalise on other teams howlers.

True. But we also had 20 shots yesterday 10 of which were on target. If we’d been capable of putting a fifth of those shots that were on target we’d have been top 3 still, if we’d put a tenth away we’d still be in the playoffs.

Failing to score has cost us more points this season than goal keeping errors. It’s just easier to point the finger at the goalie than it is a failed front line. We’re fragile and susceptible to one result changing our season because of the sum of all parts not just one.

Correct that is going to be our downfall goals scored not goals against.

So let's spend any money we have on a goalkeeper because none of ours are good enough, keep the rest of the team as it is.
Where do people think we will end up?

Well without 3 of those howlers we would be in the automatic promotion places.

Yeah we are really going to get a striker from a higher league.

Bakers legs were going as a winger in his last season here. He played in a central area at Portsmouth.

How about with the goals we haven’t scored? If we were scoring more we’d probably not be in a position where so vulnerable to a handful of goalkeeping errors.

The stats don’t lie. The two teams at the top are scoring way more than us so when they do lose whether that be for goalkeeping error or whatever they’re largely secure in the automatics because of the amount of goals they score making up the sum of all parts. Largely.

In a way I agree with you. Although burge is poor he’s at a level where many keepers are poor. In terms of priority it’s low. I would sign a premier league loan keeper of a club wanted one to gain experience but it’s a gamble at this level to find a permenant replacement in January.

The point was that Oggy was a prem keeper, but still made mistakes. Burge is L2. So will make more. He has made some excellent saves too.

Lee Burge is a decent League 2 keeper. I would still prefer him to the unpredictable RCC.

I think decent is going a bit too far. I’d say average L2 keeper.

It’s the way football at this level is played , like Sunday park football. Fart in a box football with no tactics

Have we gone on to lose?

Not talking about just plain old mistakes. I am talking about absolute howlers such as today and O'Brien's two etc.

Am I right in thinking every time we have conceded an absolute abomination of a goal we have lost?

We've definitely lost 3 of the 4, I can't remember Burge's first one other than it happened.

You can’t just look at goal keeping howlers though and blame the goalies if we don’t make the automatics or playoffs. When you’re as impotent as we are at scoring goals if we miss out it will be down to a combination of the two. It’s the sum of all parts especially over a full season.

And If we had scored all those sitters we had missed we would be well clear at the top of the league and three howlers wouldn't have even mattered.
Just think that people are missing the bigger picture GK is the least of our problems IMHO.

If we keep the squad as it stands right now. We will make play offs. Very confident of that. 26/28 points from 19 games. That’s basically win another 8 games, Draw 3, lose 8.

But if we want to improve and actually challenge for promotion we need a another striker in ASAP who will score 10 goals between now and end of season to take the pressure of McNulty.

To get in autos we need another 38/40 points for 2nd or 3rd place , that’s basically 2 points per game. Will take som doing now.

We have one of the tightest defences and one of the most toothless attacks. That means we have to count on grinding out 1-0s and if we concede we're buggered. Would be a lot less of a problem with Jones and Andreu but we have not adapted to those injuries at all.

I think we can make the top 3 with just a little tweet.
We lost to a very poor side yesterday. I sat with the home supporters yesterday they were just happy that they escaped yesterday, with better finishing we would have won that game comfortably.

No but a goalkeeper is by definition a specialist position so it’s more probable a player of genuine potential and ability is available than an outfield player of the same age and experience

Conceding a few doesn't matter if you know you'll score more. McNulty aside I don't know who will, and he will have off days too.

Most people on here are crediting a number 9 for his abject failure in front of goal so at the same time suggesting a goalkeepers primary objective is not to concede a goal seems a contradiction
