Based on my rough maths evening games thus season account for 31.3% of all matches but 45% of all losses and at home there was a dramatic drop in home performance during evening games - the win rate falls by more than two-thirds compared to daytime home games (from 63.2% to about 20.0%)!!
Nothing to worry about for now but it's been a talking point in my family so wanted to share!

Some of the defeatism on here is a little bit much to be honest. If I was a gambling man crunching numbers, you’d back Sunderland to get over the line but this KO football over 2 legs and weird things happen.

In the 22/23 season our away from in the second half of that season was top drawer - the last game we lost away was in February!
We were in a groove with the perfect counter attacking players.
We've been shite away this season - and based on Friday, have you seen anything that makes you think we can either score two, or keep a clean sheet!?

Sunderland’s home, away and head-to-head against us was poor… they still overcome that and there’s no reason that we can’t.
We’ve won away at Sunderland a few times and they’ll be mindful of that and they have to deal with that whilst having the pressure of maintaining a lead.
It’s the first half of the tie. We probably believed in 17/18 and 22/23 that we ‘needed’ to win at home. We didn’t and overcome strong opponents at home to progress.

That’s a given… I’m sure if you went back to the relevant threads covering the playoff years there would be a lot of similar opinions viewed then as there is now.
I remember thinking we needed to beat Boro to go through in 2023 because we hadn’t won at the Riverside. We also got beat 3-1 by Notts County in the league before the playoffs and iirc, we had a miserable record there! The point is simple: whatever happened in the league campaign is irrelevant and form goes out of the window. It’s two legged tie and we have the confidence that we were the better team last Friday and without MVE’s kamikaze back pass, we’d be taking a draw to the SoL and feeling confident we will win.
Every neutral I’ve spoken too still backs us to beat Sunderland despite losing because they can see that we were clearly the better team in the first leg.

It was 2-1 away at Notts County in the league a few weeks prior to the playoffs.
Ponticelli equalised with about five minutes to go but they scored the winner pretty much from kickoff

Nonetheless, we lost and Notts County had only lost 2 games at home all season. I’m sure many people on this forum wrote us off back in 2018.
My own view was that we needed to win at home. In reality, these nights are the big games where true heroes emerge.

We were the more attacking team with the most possession, not the better team. We created one clear cut chance which Rudoni scored from. The rest Sunderland coped with comfortably.
Sunderland came with a game plan of being organised, soaking up pressure and relying on the counter attack.
They got three chances and were clinical with the first two. Wilson made a good save from the third (and has actually kept the game alive for the second leg).
Sunderland executed their plan perfectly and were the better team on the night because of that. They didn't make mistakes, we did and they were ruthless when we did.
The game is still alive but who scores first at Sunderland is crucial. I suspect having got the lead from the first leg Sunderland's approach will be the same. We are not good at breaking down well organized teams. I suspect we will require a slice of luck if we are to progress.
Not sure about defended comfortably, we struggled trying to go through the middle, but we got down the right side easily, and down the left when EMC came on, just the final ball was poor, saka went past their LB every time, and MVE made the goal doing the same , target the full backs again, we don’t need to do too much different, forget the 2nd goal, they never created that, they made 2 chances,
and we’ve never not got to the final, don’t get the stress, it’s still happening Never mind all the hocus pocus, it’s all going to come down to whether we have any more match winners than Jack Rudoni.
I don’t really think we have right now that are consistent , perhaps Haji Wright but he looks half arsed in many games, especially away. Saka can provide a bit of magic but not often away. Thomas in the air at set pieces ?

cant be too harsh on wright gets 3 goals then gets stuck out on the left, he’ll come good tuesday, he always does,just need everyone to be right on it and no silly mistakes, they created 2 chances, they’re nothing special,
