They weren’t even that good at the Euros, they didn’t have to be. Southgate has wasted some glorious draws and opportunities.*

*tbf we played well against France in the WC Quarters. Just not our night

Italy have been lacklustre since 2012. Didn't qualify for both 2018 and 2022 World Cups and went out in the group stage in 2014 (with us coincidentally).

It’s quite bizarre to be honest. They beat us, Belgium and Spain at Euro 2020 (albeit from memory De Bruyne got injured for Belgium) and then, without any major changes to their team, fail to qualify for the WC.

There’s some rewriting of history here. Italy were at the back end of a world record 37 game unbeaten run when they won the euros

Germany sack their manager after a poor run of form, the latest being a 4-1 home friendly defeat against Japan. Rudi Voller put in temporary charge.

Germany are shite, what a huge fall from grace , nobody fears them anymore and they've won 5 of their last 17 internationals , lost 4-1 at home to Japan

OK - no empathy for their people then, who are obviously all of the same mindset? I know you like being contrary, but if you can't see the suffering they are going through as individuals and as a nation, then that's a shame.

You look at the media coverage of the game and it’s all pretty strange - the brave Ukrainians, a nation with so much more to think about but bravely drew against England.

The reality is we as a nation have always been geopolitically opposed to Russia and view them as a threat. It’s purely based on that. Europe and the EU in general actually has never had such views - it’s bizarre brainwashing how we are supposed to empathise and sympathise with a nation we have zero natural affinity to

such a good point actually. I went to Euro 2012 games in Donetsk and Kiev, ticket holders were sent warnings about how racist the Ukraine was.
(they weren’t at all in my experience)
Now it’s like they’re the angels of the world. Amazing how easy it is to manipulate people.

My sympathy is for the individuals who are having to endure the war. I have little allegiance/knowledge of the Moroccan nation (Chippo, Hadj aside!) yet i can empathise with the suffering that families are going through. Nothing against the Russian people - know a lovely Russian family. End of my input on the subject.

Plenty of countries have been invaded since world war 2 - how many have seen the uk citizens with their flags and silly face painting and love and support?

I used to work with a guy from Ukraine who was raised by two dads who ended up in Italy because it didn’t go down too well, which says it all.

'It's bizarre brainwashing how we are supposed to empathise and sympathise with a nation we have zero natural affinity to'. What on earth do you mean by that?

Are you saying it is unnatural/bizarre for me to have empathy or sympathy for the Ukrainian people, as Ukaine is a nation that in your view I am supposed to have no (natural) affinity to? So am I wrong to care about the people there who have been killed, bombed, raped and tortured? Should I say that to my Ukrainian neighbour, who has had to leave her homeland because of the war, that I have no natural affinity her and her children and as a result I couldn't care less what has happened?

I don't base my affinity to someone on where they come from nor is my empathy or sympathy conditional on that.

Presumably you agree that it’s wrong that other countries that have suffered in the same way haven’t had the same financial support in the way of billions of dollars and/or the chance for refugees to move to the UK?

I was responding to the view expressed that we as individuals should have no sympathy or empathy for Ukrainian people as allegedly we have no affinity to them.

It should prompt similar overhauls in the German game to the ones they used just after Euro 2000. It is sad to see.

On that note just saw Northern Ireland have now lost 5 in a row with Michael O’Neil back in charge. Hope he can sort it out in the longer term

Foden: "I'd like to play in my favourite position, the one that gets the best out of me and where I can be most creative"

Southgate: "Haha woooooah there billy big bollocks, that's not how we do things round here"

Southgate is exposing his complete lack of self-confidence. He's confident in playing players who don't play for their clubs because they've played under him for England in the time when they were regulars. I think he's had his time now as England manager, he's got no ideas which is why he's sticking with a generation of players past their best.

It's laughable really. Why hasn't he gone?

Why is it only some players that it matters about their club? Why doesn't he use games against teams like Malta to try things rather than his boring, predicable shite with his favourites.

He says stuff like that but then plays others like madison out of position.

Because we’ve lost two games in the last year and we’re about nine months away from the Euros.

I don’t think he’s getting the best out of Foden, but be serious, there’s no way we’re sacking him over it.

And I was referencing the fact you are only expressing the sympathy as it’s a country that’s been invaded by a country that geopolitically is seen as a threat to us - otherwise you wouldn’t care at all
