People have crowed for Southgate to pick ‘Players on form’ for years - Grealish hasn’t been playing for Man City so he hasn’t been picked and now everyone is whinging that Grealish isn’t in the squad now they realise his replacements aren’t up to international standard

genuinely could not make it up could you

Like Luke Shaw who has been out injured and is actually still injured?

And branthwaite and even tarkowski who is in better form than Lewis dunk , who is quite frankly the most underwhelming English CB for some time

Surprised on Branthwaite, especially with us losing Maguire. With Branthwaite now being sent back, on the back of Maguire's injury, that's the England squad two defenders down all of a sudden.

Lewis Dunk for England sort of feels like Colin Hawkins for Coventry.

Had to take branthwaite for the fact he's left footed and part of the 4th best defence in the prem , taking dunk is brain dead bloke is about 39

Branthwaite isn’t a LB though. Konsa and Gomez can cover multiple positions and that’s why I think they got in ahead of him. As for Dunk, he’s experienced and a club captain who the most similar to Maguire. Had Maguire been fit I’d suspect Dunk would’ve been left home.

Personally, I’d prefer Branthwaite over Quansah.

No but he's a left footed centre half

Why’s that important? If he’s not going to start it’s not really worth bemoaning who we took as a 4-5th choice defender.

It's important as it adds balance to the defence , basic stuff

Give it 5 years we’ll have Callum Doyle in there perhaps

Dunk was looking really good 12 months ago but had a rather underwhelming season this year.

Branthwaite I’d have also taken as the only fit left-footed defender we have. All well and good saying he’s not a left back, but neither are Gomez or Konsa. No reason we couldn’t play him as a very defensive minded LB who could basically stay back and form a back 3 when we’re on the ball, giving either Stones or Walker licence to push on a bit. Hell, might be a mishmash but even enabling Trent at RB knowing there’s more defensive balance.

Nor Trippier. We always look a little more imbalanced when Trippier plays left back/wing back, because he is so very right footed.

I’m just hoping that Shaw is fit and raring to go by the KO rounds.

Trippier is a good fullback, but his need to put it on his right foot is killing some of our attacking patterns.

Is there a reason Chilwell was not in the 26?

I’m not going to panic over a low stakes friendly, win the group and build towards peaking for the KO rounds of the tournament.

Injury problems with Chilwell isn't it?

Doubt it, he hasn't played for months.

Half fit and rusty is more like it.

Hope he does get some game time though. He's a class player.
