Tammy Abraham: England prepared to walk off over racist abuse

Thoughts on this?

Something has to be done so why not this. What will be interseting will be to see the response if it happens. Would be very difficult for the authorities to punish England for not completing a fixture.

I was thinking, I'd assume it would be a forfeit, so Bulgaria would get the win. Which would surely make their "fans" make racist chants more?

Obviously, the racism issue is the most important thing here, but unless the referee abandons the game, it would count as a forfeit surely?

You mean England fans towards Bulgaria's players?

What happens after they walk off?
Is the game abandoned?
Or do they walk on again?

So it would require a lot of the major footballing nations to agree to this together. FIFA/UEFA will soon act if they had a WC not featuring the likes of England, France, Germany, Spain etc because they had forfeited games due to walking off due to racism.

If games are abandoned in that manner, you'll soon see attendances drop.
Few people will pay good money to watch a game that they might only see a fraction of.
People will shout racist remarks just to get games abandoned when their team is losing.
The unintended consequences will be dire.

I’d fully support the team if they walked off. The sanction imposed on the Bulgarians is a joke.

So it'd make FIFA/UEFA take the issue more seriously. Which is what most people want.

What can FIFA or clubs do? They have no control over the action of individual fans.
They could ban fans, clubs or associations but that won't stop racism, it will just hurt football.

No, but at the moment the fines etc handed out are pathetic and not taking the situation as seriously as they could.

If they start losing money because good teams are refusing to play they will start to take it more seriously.

They could ban countries/clubs from the next competition entirely on a three strikes and you're out kind of rule.

Kick them out of the following 4 year cycle of wc and euros. Soon stop the twats.

Handing out bans to teams has got to be better at making a point than some tinpot fine. They're basically token punishments, a simple slap on the wrist. It doesn't offer any real deterrent. Until the punishment for it actually fits, you won't stop it happening.

That system was awful. We had no movement in midfield, and a total mess in defence. That player who got his debut goal will never get a better chance come his way.

If tonight is the best they can do it might be best if they just didn't walk on in the first place.

Looked devoid of ideas.

Shame Maddison dropped out. Would have been perfect in that game

Even if he'd been fit Southgate probably wouldn't pick him, he doesn't seem to rate him as highly as others for some bizarre reason.

Apparently he prefers players that have come through the age groups because they know how to play ’the England way’

Well, if that tonight was the England way, then we've got no chance of winning anything. Its not like they didn't have a warning against Kosovo either.

That was dreadful. Worst performance I’ve seen since we played Slovakia at the Euros. With regards to Maddison I would hazard a guess that it wasn’t his decision he’s no longer in the squad.

Maguire and Keane are at the two worst performing sides in the Premier League this season. Tonight it looked like it. Rice (I still don’t get him at all) and Henderson were dreadful. Too many players didn’t put in a shift. Only Pickford, Sterling, Trippier and Mount come out of that shit show with any credit.

Dont think a midfield with Henderson and Rice works at all. It doesn't provide enough creativity. How on earth anyone managed to spend £80 Million on Maguire actually astounds me.

It felt like watching something under Hodgson, when we just didn't know how to break teams down.

I don’t think Rice was playing until Wednesday. We were meant to be playing a 1-2 but it ended up being a 2-1. Why Barkley didn’t fill in I don’t know.

Yup.

When I saw the side I feared the worst. Keane still in and Rice and Henderson in midfield. It lacked flair and a bit of a midfield general in order to spray the ball around and link to the front players.

Rice seems distinctly average and as for Keane, he looks woefully short of quality for this level of football.

I was also irked that Southgate didn't change things sooner and make some substitutions earlier in the game.

We were second best all night long.

I would love to see Phil Foden being given a go, or at least being an option from the bench.

Very disappointing effort last night, that.

We would’ve played better with just 4 of the starting 11.

England have been shite for as long as I can remember. Flat track bullies in qualifiers get found out at the first sniff of quality and more importantly physicality. Embarrassing at 50/50’s and expect the ball to be just given to them as per what they get from the talented foreigners at their clubs. Czechs bullies us all night they must have laughed their socks off when our sub came on in tights

I think there was an arrogance about us that we have all this quality and we can win where we want, this was seeping into the fans too and certainly the case in the U21s in the last tournament.

Agree with this. Southgate has been very lucky with the way the games fell in the World Cup.

Relatively easy qualification group. Then only had to beat Panama and Tunisia to get out of the group stage. Needed penalties to get past Columbia, one decent performance in the quarters to get past Sweden before being knocked out by Croatia and people were carrying out like e nearly won the tournament.

Defiantly brought himself some time. How many more strange selections and poor performances do there have to be before questions are being asked?

Switched over to gogglebox just after the hour mark. Checked the result later and didn't bat an eyelid.
If only our climate allowed for cricket in the winter.

I admire his willingness to stick by players during rough patches but by fuck Keane was/is substandard. Don’t get it with Rice either, he’s not good enough and yet the hype around him is unbearable. Doesn’t show for the ball anywhere near enough.
