I know a few on here have done it. There is a chance that my other half's work is going to take us out of the country. Any tips or advice?

Always assumed it was quite a long and involved process but I've had a few mates move abroad (Australia, USA and Canada) and they seem to have managed it pretty easily.

I’d say to go for it, if you don’t do it you don’t want to look back and have regrets.

If it comes off I’m definitely going to go through with it. Just have absolutely no idea how to prepare myself.

I’m not sure there’s a lot you can do to be honest, you just have to go for it. Being away from family is a tough one though, that’s probably the downside of it for me.

Be prepared for house prices in Sydney, if you thought they were expensive here you ain’t seen nothing yet. Could be a good song title.

And beers. Some places it nearly £6 for a glass just bigger than a half pint. One of the most expensive places I’ve ever been. Great transport system though which they charge peanuts for.

Yeah I've seen they are pretty insane. Luckily we know people that can give us a room until we find somewhere and she'll be working immediately. Wages seem pretty good so when it comes to visa time I'll be able to apply and Skype interview in the middle of the night.

It's probably worth finding out asap how many "points" you're worth to the employment market, so you can immigrate in your own right and apply for jobs, etc.

Got a son living in Melbourne. Fantastic lifestyle and a fantastic place to live.
Always found the Australians to be great people.
Sydney is a fantastic city and there is always something to do.
Only advice I would give is to embrace it and appreciate what a lucky sod you are!!

On the flip side, I have a cousin who moved to Sydney but returned home a year later and said people over there are very clicky and hard to make friends with.

LG - how old are you? I was given the opportunity to work for 3 years in either USA or Australia. At that time I was late fifties and thought I was too old to make the move. If I had been 10 years younger I would have jumped at the chance, knowing I could rent my house out and the company would have paid for overseas housing. If young enough and the deal is good - go for it.

I think it’s the same everywhere, a common complaint I’ve heard from people who’ve settled in the UK is that the people are same as you’ve described.

Early 30s mate. I'm going to jump at the chance if it comes through. Just knew there are a few on here who have done it and seeing what they suggest. I've moved around the UK a bit so used to new places just not the other side of the world.
