Emerging talent - future stars (8 Viewers)

Who are our emerging players who have the potential to go on to top championship clubs or premier league or have a big impact for us?
Worryingly, I can’t think of anyone who falls into this category and who I would be that bothered if they left the club.
Eccles has shown promise - is he really that highly thought of? He has only come into the team because of injuries.
Bapaga - thought he might break through this season, but has rarely even been named on the bench despite our poor goal scoring record.

Is there anyone in the youth teams who has the potential to be our next big star?

I’m not knocking either of them, I think they can both be decent players for us, I’m just trying to find out if we potentially have any players who we will struggle to keep golf off if the bigger teams come in with offers. At the moment, I’m not sure who those players would be

Harrison Nee was topscorer in under 18s league before a month long injured. Came back on sat with a goal.

Bapaga is only just 18 & and by-passed scholarship level straight to under 18s and first team games, how good was Maddison at that age wasn’t anywhere near the first team or Callum Wilson, Cyrus Christie was a striker until he was 18, clubs do very very well to get a couple getting to first team standard at 18, Shipley did okay bit imo was thrust in a year too early.
Phil Foden, he ain’t a bad player, has just established himself at 19/20.

Bapaga is an u18 and still developing, he's not a finished article or a prolific goal scorer. He's had a lot of early exposure that will naturally set expectations running but just like Jordan Ponticelli before him, people should not expect too much too soon.
Harrison has has a very good year but needs time to physically develop even for 23's level.

The thing is, most of our recent young stars came through to the 1st team, in an era when we were div 1 and div 2.
Now they have to be good enough to break into championship football, which is much tougher, as our seasoned pros are finding....it's a big step up in quality.

Players, like in other areas of life mature at different times. They may not be ready to turn out for the first team but it is whether they have potential. Eccles has shown that he has some quality but will need games for the quality to be embedded into performances and consistency. There are probably a number of players that have the potential to step up but often they don't get the time, the opportunities and / or the luck with injuries. Both Rowe and Newton look decent, albeit in the limited minutes I have seen them play. Robins' must also see something in Burroughs and Bapaga.

We have done well better than a lot with our Acadamy I know not so long ago we were in the top ten producers of players good enough to play EFL or above.

It can be a bit misleading to focus too much on just age. There are a number of factors to also consider when assessing potential progress to first team level.
These include a players developmental age, the position they play [i.e. Goalkeepers tend to break through at an older age], disruptions to talent development due to illness, injury or external factors, the amount of direct coaching/playing the players undertaken, age at which they specialised, etc....

we have and whilst we still have some very talented players across the Academy I fear the pipeline may be reducing.
I know of at least 5 players that have been sold (below scholarship age) in the last few years.
This early 'cash in' for me goes against the point in running an Academy in the first place.

The Academy has proven in recent years that keeping the players to the first team not only fills positions on the team sheet but has financed much more beside - madders, wilson etc.

Wilson is a massive exception to be honest as his career was going nowhere and he was nearly let go. It’s odd as unless you went to sixfields or went away that one season most fans wouldn’t have really watched him play

I remember when Wilson was loaned out (to Nuneaton?) and thinking he’s not going to make it. Then all of a sudden he became a lethal forward out of nowhere really

He had a very underwhelming loan at Tamworth (got sent off at least once I think), but Pressley to his credit put in the work with him and kept him on.

It’s a good point. We have been spoilt really with youth development.

In fact generally, there is no player I would be gutted if we lost which is quite rare.

I saw him in a friendly against the mighty Neath. Coleman promised a strong team, we got the youth. Even the announcer didn't know any of the players' names!

Wilson looked alright, but Nathan Cameron and Adam Walker looked the standout tbh.

Yeah he also featured in a few games before the sixfields year for us and did nothing. Pressley playing him alongside Leon Clarke probably saved his career

I recall the CET doing a piece praising Cameron for 'taming' Yakubu away at Lesta. Of course just 6 years on the former was at Bury and the latter in a City shirt stumbling around like a zombie

I agree with that. He missed a few chances early in the sixfields season but he learned quickly and I'm sure that Leon was a big factor in that

Wilson started banging in goals from game 1 if I recall. Didn’t he score 2 against Crawley in the first game and a couple in the 5-4 against Bristol

But is still earning money from playing football, he might not have been the next Bobby Moore but if he has been sensible with his money is probably living in a nice house possibly paid for and still under thirty. “Making it” in the pro game isn’t always being a prem star on a million plus a year.

Average wage at that level is £40-50k isn’t it? Hardly life changing.
