Seems to be a lot of chatter on social media that he’s not injured and has been dropped for disciplinary reasons?

The way Robins described it was a bit weird.

if that is true, player power (especially expensive ones) have got rid of many managers before MR

Same with bassette though, we had all seen him nearly get his head taken off against Boro.

He was so poor again last night coming on. There was one moment where he indicated to I think it was Binks that he wanted the ball into feet, Binks played it and Simms is on his heels and the centre back got in front of him. It just sums up his complete lack of aggression. He's got to realise that he needs to make things happen, he needs to move into spaces and move the centre backs about. It's just not good enough.

We need to look at why he isn’t in the same vain of form as last season?

We’re just not playing to the strengths of any of our strikers. BTA and Simms haven’t become shit players overnight. As for Bassette, he was naive last night but because he’s energetic, his inefficiency is let off the hook. Our one good moment in the first half, Bassette was slow reacting to that and that was picked up by the commentators.

That said, the midfielders do struggle to break down set defences because they’re so slow at moving the ball. It’s been this way since 23/24 and it’s no wonder our strikers go through these droughts.

Also a complete lack of ‘aggression’ all round in our play. Cullen and Brownhill had all the time in the world last night to drop, receive the ball and get them playing. Only time I remember any pressure being applied was from Torp but he couldn’t keep it up after about 25 minutes.

It’s the one thing I’m hanging my hat on should we get Lampard - he wants to play more attacking football. Yes we score goals but we tend to be outrageously passive for large spells.

But that was the Premier League. We all know Simms isn't good enough for the Premier League, so that situation is of no relevance here.

Agree with that.

Despite doing well on xG metrics, the eye test shows that we struggle to break teams down. It is a bit slow and we rarely take advantage of the pace we have in the team with Wright, EMC, Sakamoto, Bassette, BTA and even Simms to be fair.

It’s all a bit slow and predictable. Frankly, even last season we were out coached by the top half teams, particularly Norwich and WBA.

I'm sure this is a culmination of loads of low xG shots pushing the total up, rather than not scoring as many as we should.

It sums it up that we picked up only 1 yellow card, and that was Bassette kicking the ball away. I can't remember one robust challenge.

In fairness, our xG per shot is above average. The issue is that people are taking the stats at face value.

Game state is an important factor that tends to go unnoticed here. We spend so much time in losing positions we’re going to trend towards more possession, more shot taking and conversely, less shots faced and therefore less xgA in most games.

According to xG alone, we should’ve beaten Swansea. Anyone at the game wouldn’t have felt like we deserved to win.

To use an example of this general point, Moyes’ West Ham last season had a high xG and xgA. However, when scores were level, their xG tended to be higher than their xgA and in winning positions, their xgA was significantly higher.

Win against Swansea we hardly created a chance apart from the header that hit the bar

He's now second choice striker behind a kid who's only just turned 20 and has 1 goal to his game.

Says it all really.

I'd like to see Bassette given a run with Wright on the left, those 2 together would be a handful.

Exactly, the xG for that match was 1.63 to 0.73 which suggests at face value we were by far the better team.

We missed 1 ‘massive’ chance, 1 ‘great’ and 2-3 ‘good’ chances.

In reality, we chasing the game and couldn’t breakdown a resolute Swansea team.

I can see Simms being loaned out at this rate, if another striker comes in January.

Something is clearly not working for him here, he plays like someone who can’t fully grasp what his role is, and what’s expected of him. There’s a very good player in there, however right now, he’s just not right for us.

He’s one of those players who peaks later in their career, after years of learning the game, and applying that practically.

We aren't playing to his strengths. In no world do we ever want balls played into the feet of Haji Wright, Ellis Simms, Bassette or BTA. They need direct balls into the channels to run on to and go toe to toe with defenders.

I still think we are playing it around too much. We aren't good enough to pass the ball for a jolly

You might say we're not playing to his strengths. I'd argue he's not playing to his strengths either.

I would genuinely consider giving him an U21 to fill his boots and try and get his confidence up. Never known a player who is so absolutely reliant on their mental state.

You can't always just play a ball into a channel. You need a centre forward to be able to hold up and lay off a ball. Especially a big, not so nimble or quick centre forward like Simms.
A big fella being able to do something in the air would also be handy.

Simms is a strange one. He’s obviously capable of scoring. But his touch and general play is pretty woeful. Moreover I’m just fed up with waiting for him to fire up and really put it all in. I know he has a laid back style but if you’re going to get away with that you need goals to validate it.
